All this talk about AW not being here a year from now (if they even make it that long) has me wondering where everyone will go for their "message board" addictions?
I love AW mainly for their message boards. Actually, that's all I use them for at all anymore. I've found that no other message boards compare to this one. I've learned so much from posters on these threads!
So... when & if AW closes its doors - where will you go?

Email on, because if anyone does post an url, it won't last long.
You can have 5 cents per image, but you can't have a cut of my sales.

I've already thought about the problem of losing contact with so many of the posters here...whether I stay or go.
Could we all go to a place like www.hotmail.com and open an email account in the user ID we have here on AW?
Like [email protected] and [email protected] (and [email protected])?

I will be looking for a new "home" also. Any ideas, anyone???
Because of the secrecy of my position, I am prevented from knowing what I am doing.

I doubt if AuctionWatch will disappear soon because of their recent announcement. Sudden changes (2 weeks notice is a business no-no in the real world) like this always get a kneejerk reaction ... "I'm gone and I'm never coming back" kind of thing.
But, like those who have threated to leave Ebay because of their iron rule, most don't "walk the walk" when it comes time to put the rubber to the road.
However, there will definitely be a loss of sellers using AW fee-services.
As far as the message boards go, many of you know I have been around here for some time. I have never used the AW services and I can't see why I would stop using this feature.
Hopefully, no matter where you sellers end up doing your HTML thing, you will still come here to chat ...
For those of you who really are leaving, I sincerly wish you the best

I agree that the message boards will be here for a while. However, the question will be how long they can continue to provide them with decreasing membership and little or no payment for services.
All over the net, the sites that have relied on banner ads to support themselves are experiencing severe financial difficulties.
To add fuel to this fire, there are folks who are right now developing alternate sites for information sharing. A lot of people are so angry about the unreasonable fee structure and short notice and locked threads that they won't be back.
As fewer people post here, the value of the boards decreases and soon everyone will stop coming here.
While we all get upset about ebays high handed changes, there are no good alternatives so we all go meekly back. In this case, there are a lot of alternatives and I just don't think we will come back after we determine whether or not AW will change their minds before it is too late.

I think AW will remain, I hope AW will remain. I've seen how other message boards are run and no thanks. You can give me all the 'freedom of speech' diatribes you want but when a message board isn't moderated it becomes a wasteland. The moderators can pat themselves on the back in regards to the forums they've guided down the correct path.

uaru...
I hate to admit it...but, you're right. I hate moderation...I hate censorship...yet, here is where I've ended up.
Trolls and various types of disruptors have ruined every other board I've invested myself in. It's happened every time.
There are always those who need to spoil the pleasure of others. That's their pleasure, I guess.

Yahoo Clubs is probably the most widely used. Ebay doesn't really get top billing at the Yahoo Clubs. Mostly Yahoo & Bidville auctions. You can always start your own club. I read and post with over a dozen different clubs. Only two of them are auction related. I think some of you could use a little more variety.

It won't be as much fun to post without the cute little cat, but I won't pay a fee to keep her in imagehosting.

But, like those who have threated to leave Ebay because of their iron rule, most don't "walk the walk" when it comes time to put the rubber to the road.
If there were an auction alternative with the same audience of active buyers to give sellers the same closing rate, they would walk in a heartbeat.
I'm not happy about the fees but I don't complain ~ I'm happy with my eBay results and my sell through rate keeps me profitable.
apples to apples
AW services are interchangeable with so many others, differing only in the fact that AW has the Best posters and the Best Moderators!
IOW, I'll follow you, EG!

Yahoo clubs won't work...I like the threads here, different topics, etc - and you would have to wade through posts in a Yahoo Club.
Where did Ross go, when he went? Or did he just go?

AuctionWatch has sufficient cash to last us quite a while, and the message boards will always remain free.
You do not need to participate in our fee based services in order to post in the message center.
Regards,
Mark

I know people like the message boards, but as an alternative, we could always start a list - yahoo groups (I think) just took over for egroups. It's pretty easy to set up - If there is sufficient interest, I would be happy to set one up.

For online selling I first used the eBay chat boards.
I then added AW, OTWA, Blackthorne and a few specialized sites.
Each still, and I expect will, continue to have value. All four of my primary sites are presently experiencing disruptions which are rooted, for at least three sites, in a conflict between the users and the sponsor's commercial interests.
Each also has some restrictions, limitations and characteristics that makes it less than the complete, one stop answer for my needs/wants.
I don't expect any site will emerge that is a replacement for all of them.
The best I can hope for is an additional site that is free of commercial restrictions and involvements by the sponsor, attracts a large enough user base to be helpful and has moderated community standards that I am comfortable with.
An answer might exist based on a seller oriented non-profit site under the sponsorship of a org. such as OAUA.
I expect that some form of, at least voluntary, financial support would have to be made to maintain such a site.

You can eliminate spamming, trolls, profanity, any excesses or extremes with moderators. This is the definition of "moderate". If you look up "censorship" in the dictionary you will find a different definition. By definition "AW moderators" are censors. I would not pay a single penny to support AW because of their censorship.

LOL.....how do you turn the email on. I can't find 90% of my posts. Actually I think AW should charge 5 cents for each post. Might be a lot of unhappy campers but I bet they would make more money.

5 cents is reasonable. 20 posts per day would come to a total of $30/month. Deduct 90% for deleted posts ($30 minus $27 = $3/mo)
Free speech for $30/mo. Or Censorship for $3/mo. Which ever AW prefers. Fine with me.

Why thank you Toke.
There's been a lot of AW users come & go since you & I have been here, [some of them by force ], but the ones that have remained have been a blessing many times over for me.
I can't remember ever having a problem [usually computer related for me] that an AW user didn't have a quick solution for.
This latest fiasco with AW's new fees has reminded me just how freely some people are willing to give of their time, and resources, to help out a fellow online user.
I don't mean to sound sappy, but I really do appreciate each & every one of you.

Ditto what reddeer said.....I can't imagine a day without my AW message board fix......I have been selling on ebay for almost 5 years, seen a lot come and go, both there and here and it would be a sad day to lose the AW boards. I have enjoyed many of you regular posters...ie twinsoft, reddeer, godzillatemple, HCQ and many more and usually will click on one of their threads just cause its them and I value their insight.....so at the risk of sounding sappy also, if everyone does go to another board somewhere, I hope you will let us all know so we can go too....
