It has now reached a point where a least HALF of my days e-mails are JUNKMAIL!
I am astounded at how this has snowballed! What can be done to stop this?? It's unreal.
Also, one of many e-mails I get is from "Dave", you know---the "banned CD" guy. HOW can this guy still be able to operate? I am assuming he routinely spams countless users. HOW is it that he hasn't been nailed yet???

lol, good ol' dave. i'm certain he's been zapped numerous times. i've reported him myself a few times at spamcop.net. i report all spam there, in fact, in the vain hope that eventually the flood of spam will cease, or at least decrease!
dave and his fellow spammers just move on to other providers. *sigh*

Ya know, I don't really mind the concept of junk e-mail. It's the abuse of junk e-mail that gets me. It's one thing to get a single e-mail from a spammer trying to sell me his or her product. What typcially happens, though, is that I'll get 50-100 identical e-mails at once, each one from a slightly different address so as to hopefully foil anti-spam e-mail filters. even with my new DSL connection it takes awhile to download 100-200 e-mails at once, and that's typcially what I find waiting for me when I get up in the morning. I unfortunately didn't practice "safe computing" when I first got on-line many years ago, and I must be on every spammer's list in the entire world. The ones that REALLY bug me are the ads trying to sell CD's full of e-mail addresses to send spam to. I can guarantee you that I am on all of those CD's....
Anyway, I recently registered my own domain name and can now create an infinite number of e-mail "aliases" for my primariy e-mail account. I use one to give out to friends and family. I use separate ones for each message board I post to. I use another one for eBay. I use another one for my web page e-mail link. This way, not only will I be able to determine how spammers are getting my address, I can also shut down a particular alias if it starts getting spammed.
The e-mail address I set up for eBay got its first junk e-mail within days of setting it up. I quickly changed the address and removed it from my auction description [I guess I'll just let people e-mail me through eBay from now on]. Since then, I have been blessedly spam-free on any of my new e-mail accounts. My old account is still getting hammered, but I'll be shutting that down as soon as I'm sure all my friends and family know the new address.
What a world....

What I find odd is the amount of junk mail I get at the isp address that ONLY EBAY HAS. I've not given that email addy to any other site but ebay...and a lot I get is the x rated stuff. Even got nudes.

We use Outlook Express as our email program. I have Rules set up to block any email that doesn't have our specific email address showing in the To: field. This means that bulk mailings never make it to my inbox. I only get mail from 2 people who use a mailing list, so I have special rules set up so that I do get their mail.
I also use POP3 Scan MailBox to connect to my mail server before opening OE. This way, I can look at the list of emails waiting to be delivered, and delete any or all of them. Because we have a home network, we let our email stay on the server for a couple of days so that we can retrieve it on the other computers. POP3 Scan lets me "empty" the server of all the junk that get trapped there.
I would guess that 80% of the mail sitting on the server is junk mail, which the Mail Rules keep from ever showing up in my actual Inbox. I also use a Yahoo Mail address when signing up on any web sites etc. I hardly ever use my "real" email address anywhere on the web.

Spam software(so you can't be detected by your ISP) is being sold on ebay and it gets lots of bids. I had a spam that said, "dear ebay seller, increase your sales with a merchant account..." Sent that off to ebay.
I had a spam that used paypal as a pyramid scheme. I sent that off to paypal for investigation.
I usually foward all my spam to my State Representative. Especially the XXX that is sent to my daughter, and the one's I reply "remove" and it bounces back. I like to let them know how real this problem is.

Oh No! I've been spammed! This is a SPAM thread. Just look at all the spam we can read about in this thread. Heck we can even forget to read our emails today. It's all here.
My spam got worse on my eBay only email when eBay announced their anti-spam policy. My personal email has very little or no spam and I've had it for a two years longer than my eBay one. Go Figure!
I predict 100 years from now Dave's emails will still be with us. They keep going and going and going...

teergrube = German for tarpit (think of spammers, trapped like mastodons in LaBrea, sinking slowly in hot asphalt ) A diabolically clever device indeed. Basically, it's something ONLY a sysop can set up on a mail server.
BASICS:
All email is a series of commands and answers between an SMTP host (ISP's mail server) and a client (your email program)
Most hosts are multitasking ... and any time they spend waiting during one task is used on other tasks.
Any SMTP host answers to the client command lines with specially formatted answer lines. If there is a single space between the return code and the comment, the host has finished its answer and the client can send another command ot the body of the email. BUT!!!!! If there is a minus between those parts, the client has to wait for further answer lines from the server.
So ... if these continuation lines are sent verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry slowly, almost no bandwidth is needed and the spammer is slowed down effectively. Their spamware spends much more time waiting for the "OK" than it does sending spam. And the spam stays on the spammer's computer.
A "teergrube" is a special version of mail server software that can be programmed to activate (or to have the conneciton handed to it) if known spammers contact the SMTP host. so that while the server IS accepting spam, it's EXTREMELY slow. The objective is to tie the spammer's computer up for as long as possible on each message. The originator of the idea was able to hold a spammer online for more than two days.
What happens if a non-spammer's email client runs into a teergrube ... unless you are trying to connect directly to a mail server that doesn't belong to your ISP, or if your ISP is notorious for hosting spammers, you don't have to worry.
And now, children, you know why eBay's mail is so slow ... their technowizurdz installed a teergrube instead of SendMail!

I really appreciate your taking time to explain this. I really detest spam mail and am trying everything I can think of to fight back, so when I came across this site I thought perhaps I was really onto something.
Back to the drawing board, I guess. But at least now if I hear someone discussing the concept I can make lofty interjections with the tarpit analogy, smile knowingly at the amazed geekoids, then beat a hasty retreat before anyone is on to me!

How exactly did you do that? I can figure out how to have certain mail moved to the trash but, not how to specify that I only receive mail that is addressed to me.

You know, some people just don't believe me when I tell them how much SPAM I get on my old [soon to be defunct] e-mail account.
I use Eudora, and can filter out about 99% of the junk, but it still amazes me just how much of it there is in the first place. I actually run a few different filters, including one where my e-mail address is not in the TO or CC field. With Eudora, if an item is picked up by one filter, it is simply deleted and shwos up in my "trash" folder. If it is picked up by two [or more] filters, however, it gets permanently deleted and I can't read it once it has been filtered. Which is to say that the junk e-mail that I see in my "trash" folder is only a portion of the total number I have actually received.
Having said that, here's the e-mail that was filtered to my "trash" folder between the time I checked this morning and when I got home from work this evening....

Sounds to me like it's time to get a new email address. I had to quit using my GTE account because I was getting 3 times as much spam as real emails.
I just checked it the other day after not checking it for a couple of weeks and it took forever to download hundreds of spam emails. I'm about to close that account anyway but it is really sick that these people get away with sending 1000s of these useless emails and there is NOTHING you can do to stop them. All of the headers are doctored and I haven't the time to trace them.

Yikes! Up until the past couple of months, I only got one or two a week- it has now increased to one or two a day. I can't even imagine getting the number that some people are reporting.
