eBay now lets you block bidders. Wow!
When did this start? Have I been asleep long?

Have I been asleep long?
Uh, yes. I believe it was discussed earlier this week & reddeer mentioned he was having problems getting it to work.
Sure hope it's fully fuctional soon! I know ONE bidder who's going top of MY list.
And I'm not THAT scary, Bill.

Bidder blocking DOES now work. At least, it retains the blocked bidders names. This sure makes it easy to block the pyscho bidders and deadbeats.

Maybe they've gotten the bugs worked out.

tsunamii,
How are bidders being notified they can't bid? Anyone know?

C'mon Bill, get with the program.
I think I'll run another test tonight. I'll let y'all know what the blockee gets when they attempt to place a bid.

Thanks for the link, cdnbooks! Those 7 retaliatory negs left my "my favorite deadbeat" still pain me but, adding this jerk to my "blocked bidder list" is some salve to the wound. I don't think he'll ever want any of the other stuff I have on auction...but I'd dearly LOVE him want something so bad it hurts!

Better than nothing, but I believe it would be more beneficial if sellers had the option to block anyone with a net feedback in the minus range.

Ofcourse AOLers can create new identities without credit card verification so I doubt if the new blacklist is very effective.

Much as I like it as a good step in the right direction, I've come to wonder if it might not end up being like a red flag to a bull to some denied bidders.
Taking tsunamii's bidder, it might just aggravate that bidder enough to go create a new ID & bid on tsunamii's auctions just to get back at being blocked.
Then it could become a game of how fast someone could create IDs to get around bidder block.

Eventer ...... True enough, and I'm sure it will happen. BUT, it will be effective for at least "some" of the problem bidders, and if you cancel a bid near the end of your auction it will at least allow that ID to be blocked in the final minutes of the auction.

reddeer,
Oh, I intend to use it even with the potential downside.
How'd your test go? Is it functioning okay for you? Does the blocked bidder get an email notice? If so, would you please post what it says so we can know? Thanks!

I'm waiting for my test bidder to wake up & answer his email. I'll post the info as soon as I find out.

The bidder who emailed me is someone who WOULD change names. He has many times in the past. I know 4 of his current AOL names. This one just likes to ruin what I consider high dollar auctions ($750)by not paying or retracting bids.
I have no idea how he was notified that he couldn't bid. I just took my list of deadbeats and created my list. I will use it even though it will have side effects.

I asked another seller to block me and then I tried bidding. This is what it says:
Unfortunately, this seller has decided that you are not permitted to bid on their listings. You may contact the seller via the Ask Seller a Question feature if you want additional details.
Please note: You may not use other eBay accounts to bid on this seller's listings. Doing so may result in your indefinite suspension from eBay.
Now I guess I had better remind him to "unblock" me.

This feature has been on Yahoo for a LONG time and I never had a problem with a retaliatory problem when I had someone blocked. I have no idea how the bidder on Yahoo was told that they couldn't bid , but their "Bidder Black List," worked.
I wouldn't worry too much about someone changing ID's just to bid and upset your auctions as I must have had about 100 on my Yahoo "Black List," and never had a problem from them.

" Please note: You may not use other eBay accounts to bid on this seller's listings. Doing so may result in your indefinite suspension from eBay. "
It is VERY unfortunate that they decided to put this statement in.
I think that this only serves to provide a "hint" to potential deadbeats to simply create a new account and bid since it's blocked by email/handle not by anything else.
I would rather them place this in their legalize rules, and simply state here that making any attempts to circumvent this will result in permenent suspention, and leave it at that.

I asked the seller that did the test for me if he received an e-mail telling him that I had tried to bid and he said he hadn't. But he just sent me this:
"You have been approved again to bid on my auctions, hope you learned your lesson!!"
What a nice guy!

I was just wondering if sellers who block certain people from bidding would like to receive an e-mail telling them that a certain ID had tried bidding on one of their auctions. It may be useful to know?

Fascinating! As always I learn a great deal on ebay and now I learned of and used the BIDDER BLOCKING. I use auctiva Auction Manager so I was able to do a quick sort of the database by final status = credit requested, or credit requested as a status as some point in time (needed for those I left negative feedback for) over the last two years I had 38 deadbeats (approx 3000 transactions total) When I clicked on the "view feedback" on these deadbeats from within Activa only 4 were still registered users of ebay, the rest had been terminated most with quite a few negative feedbacks before getting canned. I did notice some still registered that apparently had only bid on my auction and then never bid on anything else ever again on ebay. What this would suggest to me is that eBay should probably scan for users with feedback equals negative one (-1) and no other feedback and promptly terminate those accounts. I do hope the blocked bidder list will at least slow down some of the deadbeats.
