We are very active users of Microsoft's FrontPage for Web Site creation AND I use it for auction creation also, as it just allows me more creativity than the little programs created for auctions alone.

We have been using the Full FrontPage 1998 program (not the free one that comes on many computers) and it is fantastic! Well, we thought if it is so good we would upgrade to FrontPage 2000! BAD DECISION! Fortunately, because most of our business is in my computer, my husband tested the FrontPage 2000 program in his computer first!

IF you are a regular FrontPage user, don’t waste your money on the 2000 program. The marvelous feature in the 1998 version, where you can open multiple windows (created pages) and pull items, pictures, etc., from one created page to another, DOES NOT exist on FrontPage 2000. This is a VERY important feature for those who use any type of repetitive information, gifs, or such.

My husband called Microsoft regarding the location of this feature on the 2000 program and was told that it no longer existed. Microsoft said that the 1998 program was much larger, and was actually 2 full and totally different programs running parallel. That because of that, it took a goodly amount of space and ram, and that many couldn’t really run such a large set of programs, so that in the 2000 version they had down sized FrontPage so that it is a single running program – and with the “down sizing” the marvelous feature of opening multiple windows and copy/paste repetitive information from one page to another was discarded!

Consider carefully before you waste your money upgrading to this new program. My husband kept the 2000 on his computer, but basically we are using the 1998 FrontPage for all our work.

Typical MS trend. Build a better product, then overload it to death in the upgrades.

You can uninstall and reload the 98 version without reformating by going to start, settings, control panel, and then to add/remove programs.

Neither of us ever removed the 1998 version, but thanks for the info. I just meant, ANYTIME, we try a new program we put it in his computer first to test, then the computers at our shop, and after a couple months of testing, if there are no bugs, glitches, etc., and everyone is satisfied, THEN AND ONLY THEN, do I load it in my computer.

I presume there are some folks with older computers who couldn't run the larger 1998 FrontPage program, but I can't imagine many people seeking to use such a program would also be using an antiquated computer - but what do I know - actually, my opinion is Microsoft just wanted to upgrade this program and couldn't think of anything new to put in it so it downsized and rationalized more people could then use it!

This unique feature they removed is a major feature for those who do web sites, repetitive auctions, etc. What a major mistake!

I've never used FrontPage until a couple of weeks ago, so of course I have the 2000 version.

I created a very simple website with it and it's making my auction creation much easier as well compared to using Word. I love it really.

But I suppose when you're used to a certain feature and it's gone, it's quite a disappointment.

Although I am certainly not a Microsoft groupie, I'd rather have seen a different title to your thread, such as "2000 FrontPage Upgrade Sucks" which doesn't trash FrontPage all together. Your title is totally misleading vis a vis your actual thread, and not very fair to a good HTML tool.

Thanks JWPC. I, too, prefer FrontPage 1998. And, like you, it is not just because I got used to its features. Its features are simply better for webs and auctions.

Hey ISLANDER: She (JWPC) specified FrontPage 2000 in the title! Then, she explained exactly why she preferred FP 1998. She said she adores FP '98. So she didn't trash FrontPage, she trashed FP 2000 for the reasons she cited. Give her a break!

Thanks, badcompany

Sorry you misunderstood, I LOVE FrontPage, it is just the point that the 1998 Version is MUCH larger, and more comprehensive than the 2000 version.

Regarding the "S" word, sorry I don't use that type of language.

Some days I just can't win. I purchased Front Page 2000 two weeks ago. I have already opened the package so I can't return.

I wonder if Microsoft would let you downgrade it to 98??

Probably not. It's taken me two years to get moving on building a web page and now it seems like I'm doomed before I start. Oh well it's only money. This will teach me to procrastinate.

Can you even purchase 98 anymore??

I find macromedia dreamweaver works much better than frontpage. It's a little more complex and expensive than frontpage but you definitely get what you pay for.

I still have an old 2.0 version and it's far better than any frontpage version.

Mildreds -- wouldn't it be cool if we could get MS to pay us $89 to downgrade to FP 98?!? Don't get too down-in-the-dumps about not having 98. 2000 is still a great tool!

jwpc -- re: moving oft-used gif's etc., into a new page, I think I read about a way to do it, but I'm too sleepy right now to think. I'll find it tomorrow and post.

badcompany - yep you're right! My humble apologies.

Ta tah!

I believe you may have misunderstood me - I know how to move/remove used gifs, wording, icons, pictures, etc. - what I meant was when one is creating similar pages, the features in 1998, which allow the opening of multiple windows in layers, so that one can easily copy/paste from an original to a newly created page instead of taking the time to put all the inserts, and links in one by one.

You have a good evening.

Hi. I have been busy creating my web site. In a book I bought it said you had to activate "Microsoft Web Personal Server" in order to test the web site on my computer, so I followed the install and it came back with
"Microsoft Tranaction Server" was not completed sucessfully" There were errors.
An Unknow error occurred while making MTS spcific changes to the system registry. error code Ox80004005.

Do you know if I need this registry??

Thanks Its too late to call Microsoft. Thought someone might know.
