I have a recent winning bidder who says he will only pay me if I rate him positive first. Anyone else have that happen to them, and if so, how did you handle it??

I didn't put the &qu in the title. I put " ?? in the title.

Is this a newbie?

How about this:

Dear XXX,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I'm unable to meet your request for positive feedback in advance of payment.

ebay procedures call for the winning bidder to pay for their item first. Once payment has been received, I will ship your item to you. After you've received your item & the transaction has been successfully completed, then I'll gladly leave feedback for you.

ebay feedback is to be based upon the entire transaction and I'm unable to determine feedback until the transaction has been concluded.

I accept the following payment options:
blah..blah...blah.

Then if he doesn't get the idea, plan on sending this to safeharbor as feedback extortion. Be sure & save all correspondence.

I would tell them that first they pay, then you ship, then you do the positive feedback thing.

If they don't, then you will do the NPB thing and the request for FVF thing, and then you will do the negative FB thing.

It's their choice.

And I would foreard the email to [email protected] as feedback extortion ... it's a major no-no.

I couldn't agree with you more! Great advice! It's tactful, polite and you've always got the Safeharbor option if things get nasty!

I always try to give customers like this a way out by staying neutral & not responding to their threats/intimidations (it doesn't always work but sometimes it does!).

There's no sense in getting nasty or hostile in return because you know you've got the SafeHarbor card in your pocket.

Hopefully he'll see it's not going to work & will carry on & pay you like he should. If he doesn't, SafeHarbor, NPB & get 'em.

I agree with eventer, EXCEPT I think you should go ahead and cc ALL correspondence to SafeHarbor.

I agree with kudzurose. When I read your title, I immediately thought "send that puppy to Safe Harbor, do not pass Go."

Of course, you could always just leave him a positive feedback stating "promised to pay me if I left him positive feedback first".

Then again....
