I just sent two cook books to New Jersey and because they were a little more valuable than most books I sell I took special pains to pack them well. They were surrounded by bubble wrap and extra sheets of card board and suspended in a box by a large mass of shredded paper so they were held 3 or 4 inches away from any of the corners as they usually crunch the corners in. I insured it for $97.00.
When it got to New Jersey the customer said it looked like a truck had run over it. One cover was completely ripped off and the other book had a corner folded up.
The postal inspector says no payment because it was not packed well enough.
Obviously I will not be wasting my money for postal insurance anymore.
I am not interested in argueing with them. Any thoughts on getting even or better than even? Be creative.

I don't trust any place that requires you to buy insurance against their own negligence.

Gravid:

I'd push the issue with the PO a bit more. Use your charm.

Then, I'd sign up with www.u-pic.com. Lower premiums and no hassle policy.

As for getting even..........my Evil Side will work on that one and get back to you.

I don't have any charm. My wife says no poker face also - described it as death and destruction look. I am an old grouch and a curmudgeon. Really really tired of people and organizations that can't keep their agreements with me.

LOL about the charm. Me too.
Not sure how to get even. But it stinks that this happened to you and I just wanted to say so.

Thanks - It is so satisfying to hear some affirmation. You start thinking you must be nuts after awhile.

I know how you can get even....

Find out the name and address of the person who refused to honor your insurance claim and send thousands of the large priority boxes to his/her house.

I am confuse...you did not indicate the package being return to you. How did you present the item to the postal inspector for a claim?

gravid, I understand your disgust, but you are doing exactly what they want you to do - letting them get away with selling you insurance they don't want to honor.

The best way to get even with the person who made the call, is to GO OVER HIS/HER HEAD and appeal it until they are proven wrong.

I agree with tiggressoflove - any place that expects you to buy insurance against their pure negligence is not to be trusted. Where else do we have to do that? There should be some guarantee that they won't DESTROY an item, regardless of whether one bought insurance or not.

The customer took it back in to the post office with the packing and sent pics. I don't want to go through sending it back to me. That would require more effort than the customer could resonably be asked to do as she has already made two trips in for this.
I am ready to give rather than spend more time and money to get them to change their mind.
I am also pretty tired of UPS. They now want everything open at the service counter so they can judge the packing before they will OK their insurance. That leaves FedEx Ground as the only people I am still happy with.

The last time I had the same old problems with the local Postmaster about an insurance claim, I told him he would be very sorry, if he did not take care of this in a professional manner.

He did not believe me.

I sat down and wrote a 4 page letter to the Postal Service Complaint Dept. Detailing this saga of incompetance.

In order to make sure someone with authority saw it, I faxed it, I emailed it, I snail mailed it. WOW RESULTS!

He called and did everything but crawl, he did beg. I told him I wanted the claim handled properly.

Now if I tell them something is supposed to be handled a certain way they take my word for it.

The counter person told me when first started the Postmaster told him, "What ever you do just don't make Mrs. ____ mad".

Just insist on what is right, and if you have to write a 4 page letter to get what is right and fair, DO IT. They deserve it.

Not to mention it isn't the person's job at your local PO to decide which insurance claims get paid and which don't.

If all else fails, file it at a different post office. Claims don't have to be done through the delivering post office (believe me when I say this, we just went through this with one of our items)
