Can I print postage and the address and all on regular paper and just tape it on with wide clear packing tape?

Although there are people who glue regular paper to mail items there are specific postal regulations forbidding indicia-based postage to be taped or glued onto an item to be mailed.

Avaloncourt, do you think taping over just the buyer's address would be all right? I wouldn't tape over the postage area. I'm concerned about rain.

I do tape over the name all the time, and I don't think there's a regulation about that. The indicia needs to be machine readable, and tape could interfere with that.

I don't think the name is a problem. I typically do that on items with a significant value to make sure that label remains on the item. I can't see you having any problems with that.

Taping over the name and address is fine.

Taping over ANY postage is not allowed and the post office will void it and send it back to you.

Trust me, I know. I have done it with stamps and with endicia. I had a postage label a little loose, and thought it would be wise to tape it. That cost me.

OK, so which labels should I buy for the 'stamp' part?

For general use, the 4 x 3 1/3 labels are quite popular. You can fit the postage, return address and mailing address all on one label. If you want to print delivery confirmation, the label next to it on the sheet can be used.

Folks here are giving the correct advice -- current USPS Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) rules prohibit taping over the postage.

This may be changing in the not-too-distant future. Amendments to the DMM are anticipated which hopefully will allow you to print a postage-laden shipping label (e.g. Priority, Media, Express) on plain paper and then tape it to a box.

We have done a bit testing here with clear tape and we've had great success with scanning. But the experiments have been limited to one or two tape brands and are far from conclusive. I believe the USPS Merrifield Engineering Center has been tasked with looking into this in detail.

We (and I'm sure the other PC Postage vendors) will be notifying our customers when this new ruling is finalized.

BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if there is some delay in this rule change because of the anthrax contamination. Naturally, this event has refocused many USPS resources.

Best

Mommacude, I highly recommend downloading avaloncourt's templates for those labels:

Just had my first Endicia postage package delivered today. Cross-country at Media rate took two days!! I'm a believer.

I have been using the Aug 2000 228 priority label available free from the USPS for two months now with no problems. I do tape over the customer's address. If anyone wants my layout, just email.

wbdareme: thanks for posting the address. I'll make it clickable for you. It sure does wonders on media mail. I love the speed, convenience and cost savings.

Another question: what about the top label. . . isn't there one there? How do I use that one? Or is that just the default?

Thanks,
Christine
