Check this out. This is a first for me. I bought a widget for $1.00, put it on ebay and it brought an excellent profit. Less than $100 mind you, but it was a good sale for me--I was thrilled.

The buyer emails after he got his item, saying that his proxy bid was well over $200, that another like item brought nearly $300 recently, and that I had it in the wrong category and how rare it was.

Gee thanks buddy.

OUCH!

I know I've lost out on a few things over the years, but most of my winners took their treasure and went quietly away...How very nice of your winning bidder to inform you of your error after the fact!

Almost tempting to e-mail him back and let him know it only cost you a dollar.

Yes, very tempting indeed.

Oh, it hurts! My 'boo-hoo' experience was with an item that I put a $20 BIN price on (DUMMMMMBBBB). It got bought immediately of course, and an unfortunate non-buyer wrote me an informed me that it was a one-of-a-kind (truely unique)war-time item that collectors pay $200 and up for. No more BIN on items I know nothing about!

loosecannon...what you need to do is email the buyer back, thank them for their info, then say this:

"I realize that this widget should go for a much higher final price, but since I bought 4 of these at $1.00 each, I figured I'd pass on some of my good luck to my customers."

That'll torque a jaw or two

mcjane,

No, no, it wasn't.

BTW, we had another guy email (on the item this thread is about) after it ended saying how sorry he was that he didn't get to bid--that his internet service was down during the last hours of the auction.

So, it might have been more bad luck for us than anything else (we did not know the item was especially valuable though), and if he could have bid, we might have gotten closer to what is was "worth".

If I'm ever lucky enough to find another, watch me start it at $100 and not get a bid!

Wouldn't that beat all....

Can't type...

Glad to hear that, for a minute I thought it was the Atmoray.
I should have bid on that thing, I'm sort of facinated with it. But, then again, what in the world would I do with it.
I still have that lumin shade light I found in the trash to list, just don't know how to do it & there have been none listed to even get an idea.
I went back to that trash heap in the hallway of that old building where I found the light & found more stuff. Four Chair pads, still with tag on, 7 Halloween T shirts, an unused book of Lion King postcards, 3 beanies & no kidding on this, an exercise bike still in the carton, never used & with the invoice tag still pasted on the outside dated 1991. The box is beat, but the bike is like brand new. Has to be assembled. Also tossed was an exercise stepper, very good shape, but not new.
I'm hooked on trash picking.

Loosecannon,

You didn't sell that Atmoray to your neighbor, did you? I saw the thread in the RT & immediately wondered.

I'd write Mr.SmartyBuyer back & say, "Gosh, Really? And here I just inherited a WHOLE storage locker of them. Thanks for the info!"

This reminds me of what supposedley happened to Thomas Edison when he sold his stock ticker invention.

After the deal was consumated for $100,000, the purchaser told Edison that he had been prepared to pay up to $350,000 for the invention and was glad Edison didn't drive a hard bargain.

Edison just smiled and replied that he was prepared to accept only $10,000 for the invention, if he could get anything at all for it.

Eventer,

No, not to my neighbor! That atmoray thing went to someplace in Dixie. Actually, the guy is thrilled with it, and why not? Where would he ever get another for a measely $56?

Speaking of measely sales, I'm putting more of my better items in the antique mall nowadays and less on ebay. Certain things I still couldn't get a plug nickel for out of the shop though, and are tailor-made for ebay. Good to do both I guess.

Reamond,

Wish I were as smooth as Thomas Edison was. Good story.
