Hi all,

I have a steam ship or ocean liner ashtray that has a small oval sticker on the bottom that says "Made In Germany". I was prepared to date the item to the 1960's but now I'm not sure, because of the political division between East and West Germany post WWII (I've seen plenty of "Made in W. Germany or West Germany labels).

Could the piece possibly be pre-WWII with simply "Made In Germany" on it?

All I know for sure is the item is certainly 1970 or before since the piece was made for a company that went out of business about 1970.

LC, it could be pre-WWII...but it could also be between 1945 and 1970.

If I'm not mistaken about this, there was never a requirement that the "West" Germany designation be used (just as in 'occupied Japan').

Both East and West Germany considered themselves the real Germany, so don't rule out East Germany either, especially since the piece appears to have been made for a German company.

I had something in its original box once, and either the box was just marked "Made in Germany", and the piece was marked "Made in W. Germany", or vice versa.

What does the sticker look like?

Thanks gc

I don't have a good picture of the label, but you can see it here. It's a small oval sticker, yellow field and gold lettering and border.

What do your instincts tell you the age is if there were no sticker? From the design and style, I'd put it in the 1960s. It looks very similar to all the advertising ashtrays produced by Hauzer-Art during that period (late 1950s through early 1970s). Of course Hauzer-Art couldn't have been the manufacturer since they were an American company, but the style is definitely similar.

This is a link German ships sailing under the North Lloyd name

Bremen V which sailed from 1957-1971

Bremen IV sailed between 1929-1947

The dish looks like it would have come from the Bremen V

Zazzie,

Thank you. I've seen that site before and that's what got me to wondering! They had five different Bremens and I knew it was from either the last one or the one before.

Can't disagree with you at all. I was hoping it could be earlier because it would be worth more money quite likely.

I'll advertise it it as likely being made between 1957 and 1970.

Yes, the sticker looks like foil. I'll advertise it as '57 to '70.

Thanks to all!

ahhhh yes....the sticker question!

Had to chew thru my tongue recently when someone brought some "real old dishes" in to my B&M to sell me......

.....they hadn't ever bothered to take the UPC labels off the bottoms!!!

Yep....I would say they were at least 15 or 20 MONTHS old!!!!!

I've sold a few brewery ashtrays of same design recently. All dated late 60's/early 70's.
