Remainders are publisher’s overstocks and out-of-print books. When a publisher has returns from a bookstore, or they have overprinted a title, they "remainder" the stock to make room for their newer titles.
The books are then sold to wholesalers then sold to book sellers like myself, who in turn sells the books at greatly reduced prices.

What makes a book a "remainder" (who's to know what's been returned to the publisher?) is the fact that the book is further marked/defaced by the store.
A remaindered book will usually be marked with either a rubber stamp, black felt marker stroke or spray, usually on a book's bottom edge. (A few escape being marked, but not many.)
It is considered to be a defect and should always be noted in one's description.
