At the end of each auction, I always get the e-mail address of the winning bidder and send them a personalized winning bidder notification. I do not use checkout, or PayPal's automated messages because I prefer to do my own. However, in the past week or so, approx 75% of my messages are returned with the following information: "Your message was not delivered because the return address was refused." I then have to use the "send this auction to a friend" feature to get my e-mail to the customer. Does this have anything to do with not using checkout? Because I don't go through their system, are my messages being blocked? Any ideas?

It is odd that 75% of your emails are getting bounced back, but there's no way that ebay could interfere with email going directly between two users' email accounts - YET!
If it were happening with only one other email account, I'd blame it on the other guy's spam filter. But since it's happening with a number of people, I'd bet that your ISP is experiencing a routing problem that's causing the returns. You may want to contact your ISP's tech support to bring your situation to their attention or to find out what's going on if they're already aware of the problem.

Yes, I do believe it has to do with the Checkout. I tried to return a couple of email messages generated by Checkout by hitting "reply" in my email program. Both were returned as undeliverable to me. I checked the email address in the originl sent through ebay and it jived perfectly with the "replied" email. I think it is a bug.

katy,
she said she does not use checkout.
i would say your internet service provider is the first contact,it sounds like the problem is on their end -sending out your mail

But--the e-mail messages I send to friends, family, etc. are being delivered. It's just the e-bay ones that are being returned. I've tried a variety of ways of sending it--hitting reply, getting their address from their e-bay name and also from the checkout feature if they try to contact me before I write them first. Doesn't seem to matter--if I send 5 messages I get 3-4 of them back. I have also resorted to filling in the checkout information when it comes to me first--THAT seems to work....(?)

If your replies are completely independent of any ebay forms, then I can't see how it can be an ebay problem. If you copy the other person's email address directly from any source (EOA, auction page, etc), then paste it into your own mail program and it's still getting bounced, then it's definitely something that your ISP should be notified about. I can't tell you why your non-ebay emails are flowing smoothly, though it's possible that they don't have to go through the same paths as the ebay ones (especially true if your friends and family are using the same ISP service as you).
