Hi--My local thrift shop has three huge boxes full of Franciscian pottery dinnerware. They are dark green in color and very heavy. I've checked out the past e-bay auctions and can't find any like them. Any idea if they're worth anything?

I think it would depend on the pattern and condition. No idea at all what the pattern name is? Nothing marked on the bottom besides the Franciscan name?

There is other writing besides the Franciscian name on some of the pieces, but it's mostly worn off. Only a few of the pieces were out on display, and these ranged from very good to excellent shape. The rest were still boxed up. I can't remember for sure, but the pattern seemed to be kind of a sunburst? Mostly it was very dark green with a lighter green 1" or so stripe around the edges. Guess I'm going to have to go back tomorrow for a better look. The only Franciscian I found on e-bay was light colored with apples, etc. on it. This is very dark.

Check as many pieces as you can to see if you can find a pattern name. Even a partial pattern name might clue you in on eBay search and it will give you current prices.

Also in my experience the serving pieces such as bowls, gravy boat, platters, etc. generally have more value than the common pieces like dinner or salad plates. Try to get pieces without chips or cracks, condition is important.

Could it be MADEIRA?

Annekila--you are very smart! Looked up Maderia and there it was. My main problem in finding this on e-bay stems from my apparent lack of spelling ability--if I had spelled "Franciscian" right the first time--"Franciscan"--it would have helped a whole lot!

I searched front to back in my Franciscian books and couldn't find it because Madeira looks brown in my books. Is it actually dark green? Great work on finding the correct pattern name. Are you a Franciscan collector?

I don't sell Franciscan, just collect it so I have all these books. I know that Madeira was first producecd in 1967. The older the mark on bottom of the pieces the more valuable, and the rare serving pieces are extremely valuable. My favorite patterns are the apple, desert rose, and kismet. But, I only collect the apple and desert rose pieces with marks from the early 40's to late 50's nothing beyond that.

No, I don't collect it--just sell whatever I can find that I think will sell for more than I paid for it. I offered the thrift shop ladies $40 to set it aside for me and they were very pleased (I'll pick it up Monday)--I know there's at least 12 dinner plates and who knows what else is buried--there's three boxes full. I can't wait to get it home! I do know some of the logos were different--some just said "Franciscan" and the others had quite a bit more writing on it.

Before you list any of it on Ebay, be sure to put it through the " Turkey Test " on Thanksgiving.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

I need some info, too. Does anyone have any idea what the book value is of Franciscan beige ashtray in the shape of Dodger Stadium? I have one to list and don't know where to start the bidding. Thanks.

Annekila or Avante--I've got the set home and it's huge--17 dinner plates, cups, saucers, bowls, etc. I'm really happy about it. Now for my second question--the bowls do not have the scrolly floral pattern in the center, but do match in color. Are they still Maderia or another pattern? And yes, it is dark green/almost brown with the lighter green band around the edges.
