Someone said that depression glass sells well but I'm wondering, what IS depression glass? I looked up some auctions and they look beautiful but ~ is it just glass that is from the depression era? And, does anything from the depression era sell well? How do I tell if it's true depression glass or not? Thanks for your help! <br />

Depression glass is mainly low cost glass made during the depression area but extends to cover a bit more then that.

and no not just any glass sells well.

I use to sell in depression and carnival glass on ebay and yahoo in 1998-99 you could list almost anything in glass and it would sell for out ragious prices but the market is different now.

getting into selling this now is not for the weak of heart these days you have to know your items pretty well This carnival glass and depression glass is great to have and own for your own but you can only own so much when you make deals on Items that wont sell right now.

get your self some books and guides and learn all you can before you jump in and invest to much on old glass in hopes of selling.

Even some of the elegant depression glass is not selling right now.

I am from the town where Heisey was made and some of their rarest pieces are in the etched pieces. These were not marked but are in the books on Heisey. Most don't even get a bid. Here they will sell for high dollar in a B & M shop.

Be careful of reproductions.

Recommend Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass by Collector Books.

Check Amazon.com or Half.com for a used copy. Very helpful and beautiful pictures.

Also, has section on reproductions.

If you don't want to buy books, go to your local library they should have some reference books for you to look at. Walk through the Antique Malls, you can get a lot of information there. A lot of depression glass was given free from you local corner grocery store for a promotion, each week they would give a different piece. There is some very pretty depression glass and it comes in clear and colors, pink, green, blue clear and also in a color that looks like peach. I have a beautiful candy dish that my mother got from our grocery store and it is that peach color.

As DMAN said depression glass isn't selling to well, but hold on to it, it will come back. It takes a cycle, glass, pottery and now I think it is in the arts and crafts area. There are a lot of new artists out there and I think their things are selling real well.
