I have bounced three checks since last Friday. I have overdraft protection and I still had three checks bounce. Oh, there was plenty in the savings account to cover these checks but the bank screwed up. Last Thursday, I closed one savings account and opened up a new one and, somehow, the new savings account didn't get linked up to the checking account for the OD protection. The bank will be refunding the bounced check charges and will write to the three companies AND pay the extra fees the two credit card companies are going to pile on for a bounced check. But, to my creditors, I still have three bounced checks.

If one of these bounced checks was to an eBay seller, do you think they would have believed me when I told them it was the bank's fault? As a seller, I know I probably wouldn't.

The other thing that happened to me was I had a buyer contact me after she received her merchandise. She said it would not fit her particular needs and asked if she could return it. It was no problem to me and she promised to send it back to me over the weekend. She e-mailed me this afternoon to let me know she had a baby (unexpectedly) this weekend in a town a couple of hours away and didn't get the item in the mail. She had just returned hom this morning.

Sometimes, in the midst of all of the eBay stuff, life happens.

I had this same type thing happen at my bank a couple of years ago. the computer went on the fritz and subtracted the first check it processed on each account twice. there were quite a few of us in the bank raising cane at the same time and we all felt sorry for this one poor contractor. It had caused all of his payroll checks to bounce and it was 2 weeks before christmas.

I had a local women write me a check that bounced a few years ago turned it it was a bank error and the lsdy from the bank called to apoligize she asked that I not charge the writer of the check the 5.00 the bank charged me ..fine I told her just credit my acount for the 5.00...The check was written on the same bank I use. The lady from the bank told me she couldnt do that but she still expected me not to pass the fee along.

I did charge the women who wrote the check, she said she understood and would try to get the bank to reimbrse her.

mrspock Odd that a woman from the bank would call to admit their mistake and not be able to reimburse you as well.
Could it be that the woman was not from the bank, & if she was, unbelievable that she couldn't take care of a 5.00 mistake.

It's simple. If you were my buyer, I would have believed you if you had written to me before the check was returned by my bank and explained the situation.

Failing that, I would also believe you if you had gone to BidPay immediately and sent a money order.

That buys credibility.

What does NOT buy credibility:

"My check couldn't have possibly bounced since I paid you by credit card."

"I had to close my checking account because of some fraudulent Billpoint charges. I had no idea any checks were still outstanding."

"I sent you a money order to cover this. It's not my fault you didn't get it."

Mistakes happen every day. It's how you deal with the mistakes (even when they're not yours) that shows how responsible and trustworthy you are.

dixibee...

A few years ago my bank had made a mistake and I had a few checks bounce because of it. What they did was send a letter to each Company that the checks were for, and told them that it was a bank error and not mine. Because the bank did that...none of the companys charged me any fees.

Your bank should do the same thing...that way you will not have on record that you bounced a check.

A couple of years ago the bank that my employer uses debited each account that had automatic deposit, instead of adding the money. We get paid every 2 weeks, so this is no small sum.

Whew! What a mess!
