SAN JOSE - In a rare defeat for eBay Inc., the online trading leader said Tuessday that it will pull out of japan, even as the company's international expansion continues with the purchase of a Taiwanese auction site.

EBay entered the Japanese market in 2000, and never got close to Yahoo! Japan Corp., which is that country's No.1 player on online auctions. It is co-owned by the Silicon Valley Internet company and Tokyo-based Softbank Corp.

Although eBay does not charge Japanese users any fees, and did so only briefly, the site has just 25,000 items listed for sale, ranking it a distant fourth in the market

I wish the Americans would do the same, but yahoo would have to use some effort. Had yahoo kept the insertion fees free and had a FVF things might be alot diffrent now.

Japan is hardly the market it once was from my understanding. And Japan managed to sell heavily in the US but the reverse never seemed to be true even if they liked our stuff.
