I'm selling some Nagel pictures for a friend. They are currently framed, but I will probably take them out of the frames they're in to ship them. I've only shipped a couple things framed, and it's just so cumbersome and expensive and I'm afraid the glass will break. Can I roll it and put it in a priority tube or is that a big no-no. They measure about 3 feet by 2 feet.

ihula,

Once a picture has been framed, you want to be VERY careful about removing it from the frame. Depending on how it was framed, you could easily cause major damage to the picture by removing it. (especially if it is in a mat). A picture will always ship better when flat than if it is rolled. Not to mention, you'd be risking moisture damage if you shipped it in one of the priority tubes. Your best bet is to have them shipped framed by a professional shipping company. That way they will be financially responsible if any damage occurs.

It all depends on which kind of Nagel "pictures" they are. If they are the cheap posters that sell for $15-25 on ebay, then nobody would want to pay much for shipping. In this case, shipping tubes make the most sense. Be sure they are strong, very, very strong, and the post office triangular Priority mailers simply don't cut it for me. All it takes is a box of books landing smack dab in the middle of the long tube and it's a goner.

If they are limited edition prints/lithographs that can go for hundreds, then packing costs can be more.

I would consider the double boxing method and use Fedex 2nd day air since it is the most gentle of all methods. With that size you will have to get your boxes, bubble wrap and so forth all figured out. In one of my previous lives I used to charge $30 to pack and ship a 2 x 3 oil painting this way, plus the actual FedEx cost. It is a lot of work, especially for a novice.

On the other hand, one seller of high end lithos rolls his prints and charges $25 for shipping. I would expect it is inside a large diameter polymer plumbing type tube which is virtually unbreakable. I got a print that way once, and not a wrinkle!

He said he paid $1400.00 for this playboy one, and $500.00 & $700.00 for the other 2. I think the best way is to have them professionally shipped. I looked on ebay, and none go for very much. I'm debating even selling them for him - I think he'll be very disappointed. Unless all the other ones are just copies...but they look the same....
