I was just reading another thread and the poster remarked that Paypal temporarily closed his account due to a chargeback. I was under the impression that Paypal would only halt your account if you sent to an unconfirmed address and the person paying for the item filed a complaint.

Am I missing something here? Are there other reasons Paypal will put the brakes on your account. Fair or not. Thanks in advance.

If they suspect fraud they will shut you down. I've heard lots of people being shut down here, accounts frozen for reasons that I still don't understand. I've decided to try and not keep more than $100 in my account.

paypal is not the only service tightening the screws, during past xmas season, many shops on yahoo were hit with fraudulent cc purchases, banks which provide merchant accounts are taking longer to deposit sales proceeds and acting faster to reverse fund due to chargebacks.
the credit card industry has to come up with a better mousetrap for e commerce.
i am sure amzn takes its lumps also,it no longer handle cc transaction of certain countries say malaysia.
the fact that paypal makes fund available immediately after transaction is completed appeal to scam artists.
billpoint also makes next day deposit to your bank, much faster than traditional merchant account banks

if we are reading the same thread,it is some seller with a few thousand dollars in the account and 3 chargebacks, average of over 100 dollars each.
chargebacks could take up to 3 months to surface,so if she has 3 chargebacks from months back,it is possible more may be in the pipeline.
intl chargebacks could go over 6 months to years.
we dont know what is the nature of chargeback and from whom?item not received, stolen cc,item not as described.
it is impossible to win a case against use of stolen card.
if paypal studied her past transactions and it appears more are done with overseas customers from certain region,and/or involve electronic goods ,also dont forget paypal derives lion share of its revenue from ebay,it knows the ebay system well,it could look into her past auctions and her feedback file.god knows what else can they look into-your credit history, your cc on file-have you kept up with your cc payment, your bank account balance ??
also they can trace the in and out of our paypal account, where did they money go and where it comes from.
it does not have to be a payment service,if you have a merchant account with a bank and some one uses her cc to make a purchase, you can call up your bank and get her cc issuer phone number, sometimes the number for their cardholder and merchant is the same, one time i even get to hear how much is her cc balance ,when was her last payment etc,and what pending charges does she have>
this is not what i am looking for,but they played all that info on the phone.
