Anyone who attempts to log into an account that just has a numeric IP address deserves to be ripped off in my opinion. You have to be pretty stupid to fall for that.

"deserves to be ripped off in my opinion. You have to be pretty stupid to fall for that."

Thats pretty harsh I would think. Person can be new or simply does not know any better.

Look at how many paypal bash threads we see here daily, and I bet that a lot of their problems arise from the fact that very few ever took the time to read the rules.

And thats people that have been around for a long time. So I think that we can forgive the unwary.

Conmen love to prey on the uninformed. Thats why a warning from damon is helpful.

People get busy and unfortunately they do not always think before they act, thats life!

That does not make them stupid, just careless.

No, stupid. I've done stupid things in my life, and if I fell for that I would call myself stupid, not careless. Careless is when you leave your atm card at the machine. Stupid is writing your PIN on the card that is left at the machine. Someone who falls for this probably wired money to Nigeria, and many of the other internet scams going on...

pelorus - You've never done anything that afterward you thought was a stupid thing to do? If not, then either you are a perfect person, not very smart, or not capable of analyzing your own actions.

Why must every thread turn into name calling? No one should be called stupid. This forum was designed for information-not petty name-calling differences. I appreciate damon letting everyone know about this current scam. A newby could possibly fall for this considering the word FRAUD is mentioned. Keep up this fighting and sooner or later those with information that is helpful will stop posting and then we'll all be in trouble. Most of us on here will respond to nastiness-a few will start it. Please stop the nastiness or go away!!!

capolady - If you really are offended maybe YOU should be the one to consider going away instead of recommending it to others. (I am not recommending it, just commenting because it bugs me when someone tells people they should go away, when perhaps they are the ones who should leave) Nobody called Paypaldamon stupid for posting, I just commented that logging into a paypal account that has a numeric address instead of www.paypal.com on the browser is stupid. I don't care if you are a newbie, people learn by trial and error, and that is a pretty big error. Guess it is one more reaon NOT to have very much cash in your paypal account, losing it to a possible scam. That doesn't easily happen with my other bank or credit card accounts...

One time I clicked on a link from an email to log into one of my accounts. Immediately, I realized that I wasn't positive that it was legit. So, since the objective of these sites is to harvest your password, I immediately went and changed my password. Better safe than sorry.

Since we are into proper language, let me suggest to ahc3 that they substitute the word "ignorant" for "stupid" in this context.

"Stupid" implying low ability to reason.
"Ignorance" implying lack of experience or knowledge in a particular area.

Writing your PIN number down on the ATM card might reasonably be "stupid", since ATM cards are pretty common (and hence people generally have experience with them, passwords, etc), banks repeatedly warn against it, etc. Proper use of ATM cards might reasonably be deemed to have passed the threashhold from "new technology" to "common sense" for most people.

Clicking on a numeric IP address is different. It requires much more knowledge/experience to recognize the potential scam here. Its not like there are warnings everywhere "NEVER click on a numeric IP address". Unless, of course, you can point out the standard education that newbies go through when surfing the net that would give them this knowledge?

However, I will grant that if ahc3 did this, since they obviously are knowledgeable about the internet, IP addresss, and so forth, then they could reasonably be called "stupid" with confidence.

From Dictionary.com

Stupid:

1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.

2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.

3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake.

4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied.

5. Pointless; worthless: a stupid job.
The word applies here.

From Encarta World Dictionary

ig·no·rant [ígnrnt ] adjective

1. lacking knowledge: lacking knowledge and education in general or in a specific subject

2. unaware: unaware of something ignorant of the danger

3. resulting from lack of knowing: caused by a lack of understanding or experience an ignorant mistake

4. Caribbean quarrelsome: quarrelsome and aggressive

the word ignorant sounds less judgemental and still gets the point across...

"The word (e.g., stupid) applies here"

Well, from the dictionary entries quoted here, it is fairly obvious that "ignorant" is a MUCH better choice to describe the TYPICAL person on the net falling into this trap. Given the explosive growth of the net, including many non-technical people who "load AOL and surf", the kind of knowledge you seem to be requiring (numeric IPs versus non-numeric) would definitely fall into the "lack of knowledge" category rather than the "slow to understand" or "careless" category.

Like I say, experienced surfers such as YOU would, indeed, be "stupid" to do something like this, but applying it as a blanket statement to users in general is a very poor choice of words, as shown by the dictioary.

Of course, its a free world, and YOU can continue to (mis)apply words as you see fit...but you'll forgive us if we publically correct you when you incorrectly apply derogratory words.

It is pretty stupid to argue about whether something someone has done is stupid or ignorant, they basically are the same thing. I won't post on this subject again.

LOL.

Well, personally I prefer not to insult mass groups of people through poor choice of words, but if you do, go for it!

Have a great day.

PS - by the way...in many situations is it CRUCIAL to know if the problem is stupidity..or ignorance. They are NOT at all "basically the same thing". Ignorance can generally be dealt with via education, stupidity is much more intractable.
