The Post Office I go to told me today that the new rates have not had the final vote yet. So they have not been approved for the June increase yet.

Toolhound - As usual, they are wrong! The PRC (Postal Rate Commission) has approved the hikes, they will take effect. It's a DONE DEAL! The only thing unclear at this time is the exact date, though it is a near certainty that it will be June 30, 2002

Maybe a new function for Ebay to work out? Look up items by zones?
Store the location of every bidder and seller. Have a search criteria that ranks by zone location. (more local, the better) Similar to the metro location, but more versatile and would rank bases on the distance between the bidder to the seller.
This could work well because you would be informed of what 'zone' the winning bidder is in when you get your end of auction email from Ebay. This would smooth things and make them run faster. Unfortunately, it might be a good idea and therefore not be something Ebay would want to do...

Pekik - Yeah, you got it, there are something like 8 zones, so over 16 ounces, there is no standard shipping rate. Don't worry about the extra work though, I think there will be fewer customers for all of us. I certainly don't want to pay $13 in shipping for a 5 pound box from Florida.
I can't see ebay searching by zones, though it would be nice. Right now, local is cheaper by far. For example, an 8 pound package from NY to me currently costs $13.30 via priority mail, and $12.53 parcel post. Make that a more local delivery (say 100 miles away) and priority mail drops to $8.50, but parcel post way down to only $2.40 - For over 5 pound items right now, it makes a lot of sense to shop locally. That weight will drop down to 16 ounces in a couple of months
