I saw some retro kitchen stuff but didn't know what would sell. For me I found a brand new pair of shoes for $1 exactly like I had been looking at in the stores for around $30. The sales are just starting up where I live, not really in the swing yet.

Where I live in Canada I have yet to find a rummage sale this year! It has snowed almost every day for the last 2 weeks, spring MUST come soon! I can't wait for rummage sales to start again, my stock is at an end.

WELL! I must tell you all that I did fairly well today at one sale. Got two beautifully framed, beautifully painted paint-by-number pictures for 25 cents each, a wallpocket, perfect condition, for $.50, a six-piece swizzle stick set $.25, cartoony, an Alaska souvenir dish in aluminum under-dish, $.50, and my treasure! - a paper fan, painted with Japanese scenes, and inscribed from the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, $1.00. (I have a 1932 Olympics large booklet, family item, which I've been planning to sell when the time is right.) Better than I've done in ages, and this is in a small mountain town just starting up with its yard sales. I feel better already!

Edited to add: (The paper fan folds and unfolds, opens and closes, not just a stiff funeral-home fan.)

No rummage sales for me today, but there was a whole column. Seems like people are cleaning earlier and earlier. I did go to an overpriced estate sale and even with half price things will be high, so I am not going back. Some great vintage purses there, but I guess I am just cheap and $25.00 seems a lot when you don't know if they will sell. Oh well there will be other days. I can relate to Amber, I don't live in Canada, but we never know when the snow will fall as it has been rather frequent in the last couple of weeks.

I didn't go to any garage sales, but I hit about 7 thrift shops and found a bunch of good books: including some large softcovers of Janis Joplin (complete with one of those red thin plastic 45 records w/rare tracks!), Marc Bolan, Deep Purple and a couple of Elvis in Hollywood books. Plus a bunch of other old paperbacks - movie tie-in types and other "retro" goodies. Also found a few CDs for 25 cents that I'll probably get close to $10-$20 on each for!

Thrift stores are great places! Altho Goodwill leaves much to be desired with their high prices - I went into two and didn't buy anything at either!

I'm pleased to say that I hit the JackPot! I found three Homer Laughlin Harlequin animals today for $6!!!!!!! Two Harlequin cats, and one Harlequin fish in excellent condtion. Retail for all three should be $450 or more. The person selling them had no clue, and that is unusual today.

morgantown: Your comment reminded me of one of those appraisal shows I was watching sometime this past week. Twice they had people who were "stunned" at the value that was quoted to them by the appraiser. Instead of being stunned because they were being told the item was worth more than their wildest dreams, they were stunned because they thought it was worth more than that. It made me laugh.

My find was a set of lawn darts for $2 at an estate auction.

I live near Libra63, so no rummage sales yet for me either - hopefully next weekend since they say it's supposed to be warmer. We did find a full set of Wilson golf clubs after digging through the bin at goodwill. Bought them for about $25.00. Looked them up when we got home and they're going for about $125.00. Otherwise we sell things for a couple that we met at goodwill - they've been "pickers" for over 5 years and don't sell on ebay. We take 25% and they gave us quite a few pottery things and a laptop to sell for them this week. I don't mind doing it because they look up what the items go for and write the description for us. We just have to take the pictures and complete the transaction. I'm learning a lot through them too!

I saw a set of German salt and pepper shakers for $1.50. As I started to buy them a lady ran out of the house saying they were her Humels and not for sale. She looked at them, saw they weren't Humels so let me have them for the $1.50. They are beautiful porcelean bust of a young girl and boy. Found them in my dresser doll book for a listing price of $$325! They have a place of honor in my China Cabinet

Went to a neighborhood sale yesterday while it was sprinkling a little bit and the sky was dark. Figured it would keep others "at bay" and I might have more luck. Found one sale where most everything was .25 each! Lots of country decor there, so it was fun. Most houses selling had junk, but overall I did ok. One house had some good stuff, but all overpriced. Sure enough I was easedropping and heard the seller say she sold on ebay. Guess she wanted to keep the yard sale stuff to ebay too-- she wasn't selling much.

Stopped at a few thrifts too-- found one enesco display shelf that might be good but I haven't looked it up yet.

I stumped on to one of the best deals in about a year!

I sell new with tag clothing big and tall mens and plus size women's clothing.

I stumped on to a big and tall mens clothing store going out of business. The prices about 92% of retail! I filled my Vitara front to back. And then went back for another load! All name brands! I spent a bunch but I will make 3 - 5 times what I spent! These prices are less then I get from my supplier!

Happy days are here again! Now if I could stay away from the boards and write and photo I could be singing all the way to the bank!

forgot to tell you funny garage sale story.

hubby and i stopped at a sale today, the seller was an elderly gentleman.

there were 2 tackleboxes with some tackle in them. one priced $10.00 and one $5.00.

my hubby asked the man if he would take less for the larger one and the said an emphatic NO. i walked over by them a few minutes later and the man walked up to me and whispered, "i will let YOU have them both for $8.00". i said "sold" quickly and paid him.

go figure

My story is more what I MISSED at a thrift store. I was in looking at books, and heard the lady serving talking about a Rookwood vase, so when my turn came, I asked her aboutit, and she said that they had this vase on the shelf for 2 weeks with $1 on it, then someone pointed out to her that it was Rookwood, so she looked it up in a 1985 antiques book, and it was worth $300 then! She then put it on a silent auction, and the price was up to $95 already. To be honest, I don't think I would even have looked at it on the shelf (excuse me Rookwood lovers) but I thought it was quite ugly, and obviously no-one else was tempted until they knew the value. Oh well, I guess it was the one that got away!

Nice fun garage sale stories, RichieRich good for you, every now and then something like that comes along and you just have to take full advantage of it. I hope you do well with the inventory. I came across some nice stuff at a brand new auction that opened up and I stayed to the end, it was not a large turnout, so I was able to buy some nice items at a real good price.

At most of the Garage sales I went to today I found people that do not know how to park. Also found some rude obnoxious people that would step on their Grandmother if it would make them tall enough to reach an item that they might make a dollar on. I also found every old flea market dealer in the area trying to sell the junk that wouldn't sell at the flea market or on eBay.

I guess it was a normal day of Garage sales. I can't wait untill next weekend to do it again!!!

toolhound - Sounds like you had a fun day and I bet you can hardly wait for next weekend. Good luck I hope you find more stories to tell us about.

One garage sale and it was mainly clothes, so I bought them for my granddaughter. I did buy a very nice large table cloth for $3.00 but since it won't fit on my table it will fit in my booth. Thats it for me.

Did go to storage place because they had 3 storage bins to sell. Junk, Junk, Junk.
