Our son-in-law, who lives near L.A., has inherited a large set of Bavarian china, 12 place settings plus all the serving pieces. He needs advice on how to get them from Indianapolis to L.A.

Professional packer? Which moving company? Other options? He and our daughter fly to Indy every year or two but wouldn't be able to bring the dishes back on the plane with them. His mother is anxious to have them sent and gone from her house. Is there some option we're all overlooking? He's been told there is a 2,000 pound minimum to ship with a moving company.

I don't think we'd want to try to sell them on eBay from a distance like this, because who would ship them to the buyers?!

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Get in touch with a moving company and have them pack it for you, or get two dishpacks along with the cells and unprinted newspaper and pack them yourselves. Then ship them FedEx Ground. The set will actually fit in 1 dishpack plus a smaller carton, but you will want to bubblewrap the packed bundles which will take up more room. The cartons should weigh enough when packed that dimensional weight will not be a problem. A dishpack is 18X18X29" and should weigh about 40lbs when packed. You can use these dimensions and weight and get an idea of the cost from the FedEx web site. Be sure you check the dimensions printed on the bottom of the carton before you purchase it. There are a couple of companies in the east that manufacture dishpacks slightly taller than 29" and these can go oversize with FedEx and UPS and get into dimensional rating. If the moving company you select does not have the cardboard dividers, find a mover that is qualified to handle shipments for the military. They are required to have them on hand.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

Thanks tons, Sparkz! One question: What do you mean, "bubblewrap the packed bundles"? I'm assuming that means inside the box. . . .

This is something know about. I ship china all over the USA. In this case, I would get a rofessional packer, such as Mail Boxes Etc. to do it. DO NOT use newspapers to wrap in. Get bubble wrap. I wouldn't trust a moving company to wrap for shipping by FedEX or UPS. UPS will require dble boxed. If you use dish packs, pack in layerswith lots of filler around the edges. I use shredded paper as it is free.(I shred my own) I put a piece of cardboard between each layer, that way the layers are protected from each other. Be sure to sandwich all of the flat poieces iue: plates etc. Here is a piece of advise that I received sometime back. Pack to withstand being dropped from the tailgate of a semi. As far as cost of shipping, 40 lbs. will cost approx $30.00 using a dish pack. Extra charge for oversize pkg.
