Postal Service Vital Statistics.

* The Postal Service is the second largest civilian employer in the United States (Wal-Mart is the first) with more than 750,000 employees.

*In 2001, the Postal Service delivered 207 billion pieces of letter mail, periodicals, advertising mail, and packages to 148 million addresses 6 days a week.

*The Postal Service delivers 46 percent of the world's mail volume.

* In 1 week, the Postal Service delivers the same volume as United Parcel Service delivers in 1 year. In 2 days the Postal Service delivers the equivalent of Federal Express' annual volume.

how much money did they lose last year with this godawesome volume? 1 billion

How much did ups make? 10% profit i cant remember the figure

10 pound box through UPS to california 9 dollars.

letters weigh what 1/4 an ounce for 39 cents X 4X16X9= 576 i think. 576X.39 is roughly 200 dollars. moving the same amount of weight as UPS for 20 times as much and they cannot make any money. Why cant the charge the same as UPS to move a package? the USPS hits every address everyday anyways, what gives?

Why? bonuses totalled 900,000,000 last year.
And I personally think that the frontdesk people at the USPS are one of the most overpaid people I know. Cashiers at (insert food store chain here) make 7 or 8 an hour, those guys make like 15. what gives. thats why they cannot make any money.

*rant off*

kupo: Your figures are in error. The postage rate is 37 cents, not 39 cents. Also, checkout people out here in CA are getting $18.00 to $23.00/hr. Postal clerks make about the same. Before you make thse comparisons, stop & look at the number of people it takes to move the billions of letters compared to moving boxes. I live in a mobil home park & the mail man has to deliver mail to 110 homes on a daily basis(a lot of it jumk mail) UPS comes in when there is a pkg to deliver & only stops at the residence for that plkg. You are comparing Apples & Oranges. I have never worked for the USPS!!!!

With the new postal rate increase the USPS must be loosing even more money than before.
The management that makes decisions about these rates must have their heads where the sun don't shine.

A moron can see that it was a bad move as far as PM & PP goes. This move will make them want to raise rates again real soon. I'll bet it's in the planing stages now.

What a shame!!!

The rates are not decided by management, folks, but through a complicated process that allows tampering by the corporate big boys.

There is a rate setting panel which includes members of the major commercial catalogers. This last time around they included special discounts for themselves that you and I can not take advantage of, which effectively lowered their USPS costs to a reasonable level.

They were no doubt quite proud of themselves since they lowered their costs while raising it for their growing internet competition (us).

The problems of the postal service are almost beyond solution.
