Hi all ~ Quick question. I had an auction that did not meet reserve but the high bidder and I struck a deal after the auction.

However, I have no urge to work around either ebay or AW. So I'm going to relist the auction with a BIN and designate only one pre-approved bidder.

Here's what I'm not sure of. Do I relist through AW or directly through ebay to make sure I get the fees from the 2nd sale credited? I want ebay and AW to get their fees...but I don't want to pay fees I don't have to.

Thanks in advance!
Sharon

I have both bought & sold in this manner. I don't know if it is legal under ebay rules, but who is going to know?

I'm not sure on this subject, but if it did not meet the reserve.
Don't they have a make a personal offer feature?
This would allow you to make the sale on the up & up without relisting.

I just sold a book to a buyer at Half that apparently didn't have or want a credit card. The buyer used the ask a seller a question on one of my ebay auction items and placed their email address in the form so I could avoid answering through the ebay monitored system. The Half.com version of the 'ask the seller a question' form blocks out all email addresses but ebay auction's 'ask the seller a question' form does not.
The gamble was with the buyer sending a money order but with my sterling feedback that was greatly minimalized ( I mean that in a humble way ). The money order arrived today and the book goes out in the morning.

I had auctions that didn't either meet reserve ot ending price and someone wanted to buy. What I do is arrange with the buyer to relist the item with a BIN, tell them to go into my listing page and find it there because it doesn't go into the main listing right away and it works. Of course you have to do it at a time that both you and the buyer are on. It works.

JACK: How in the world could Ebay moniter all of the email that goes between buyer & seller? Think about it! There must be in the millions per day!!!! About a year ago a seller in Dallas had a partial set of a very valuable set of China. She had a reserve of $1800.00. It did nor sell, I asked her what her minimum was & I bought it for $300.00 less than the reserve. Was that illegal? I am in business to make money, not to run a charity.

Did you say you struck a deal outside of ebay? Then make the sale outside of ebay. Just get it done without all of the hassle of relisting the item. What if the bidder decides to back out after you relist? Then you are out another listing fee. Just send the guy a WBN and get it done. Ebay make enough money and won't miss a penny or two. Besides, if you make the buyer happy, they are more apt to bid on your items in the future.

Jack, ebay must monitor these boards at least a little. The fact that the auction portion of ebay allows an email in the Q&A and the Half portion does not seems like an error on their part.

For sellers/buyers to make deals outside of Half costs ebay a lot, their hefty 15% comission. The buyers without credit cards are going to find ways to exploit the system and it is ebay's job to plug the holes.

On the auction portion of ebay, the seller's Q&A is a joke as all a buyer has to write is something akin to: "write me at [email protected] as I have a serious offer that you may really like". Now the seller can safely exit the ebay monitored Q&A system to possibly conduct the deal. Why pay listing and FVF's?

Jack:
I understand completely where you are coming from! Ebay has a lot of cards up their sleeve! I play this game for the fun of it,they do it for the money! You used to be able to get contact info on anyone! Now you can only contact people if you are dealing with them. The reason! Fee avoidance!!Now a-days you can't trust anyone! I never end an auction early! I have let them use the BIN and paid more fees then I needed to! Like I said it's a fun game to me, and I have no intention of getting booted for a couple bucks! Some people will do anything to pull the wool over Ebay's eyes, And when they do make their move. You can be sure you will see the ever popular post here : Help: I've Been NARU'ed!!

To answer the original question, relist through Auctionwatch if that is how you originally listed the auction. You will get your full insertion fee credit when the item sells. If you relist through Ebay, you will get hit by AW for image hosting fees which are higher than any of the plans you are presently signed up for, especially if you have more than one image attached to the auction. Your plan to set it up as a pre-approved bidder auction is perfectly legal. I've done that several times myself. You don't even need to use a reserve or a bin. Just start the auction at the minimum you will take for the item. You can string it out for three days, or simply end the auction when your bidder enters their bid. This keeps it above board and clean. As long as Ebay gets their cut, you'll be o.k. If you try to avoid paying any of their fees, you better get lined up to start selling on Yahoo, because you won't be on Ebay long enough for the dust to settle.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

I won't be able to sleep any more! I took a few coins out of Meg's pocket and now those 9 dark riders from the Lord of the Rings movie are after me. Woe is me. I might as well turn myself in to the ebay police.

I'll use the Jack quote ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Just to clarify, I started this thread precisely because I do NOT want to work around ebay. I know many people choose to but I don't. It's just my own personal philosophy.

I, too, thought there was a "Make an offer" venue but apparently that doesn't apply when an item doesn't meet the reserve. Ebay should change that, though. Most items I get offers on happen when they don't meet the reserve.

Thanks for your insights. They really do help.

Sharon
