I'm lost in this loop of trying to download fixes to my Quick Time error, only to tell me I need QT!

I've had 2 days worth of email problems on Outlook Express (WIN 95), ISP said to download Internet Explorer 5.5 as a fix.

I was unsuccessful, got a "Quick Time Unavailable -Error #2093" immediately. Spent a LOT of time on the Apple QT site deciding what to do. I uninstalled my QT 2.0 and tried to download QT 4.0 and then got the error "Windows cannot find instbe.bat" This program is needed for opening files of type Zip file." So, where and what is "instbe.bat"?

I've been to winzip, tried to download, now I need an "Active X Component". Find that at download.com and get a "Quick Time" error.

Someone, please tell me how to get out of this loop!

Thank you!

sounds a LOT like what I've been through the past 2 days. Do yourself a favor and check and make sure you don't have a trojan lurking in the background. One virus scan said "all clear" the one from House Call found a trojan. I only saw it accidently AFTER I had to reformat and was checking my start up items and noticed a Winksoz C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Winksoz.exe. In the meantime it was driving me crazy letting me partially load my programs back on my machine.
Here's the site where I found what SHOULD be running in my start up and what I didn't need. http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm

Instbe.bat is a Windows networking file. It looks like you have an initial release of Win95, without patches. That's ancient. The problem can come when you try to install new programs which use features present in the newer version files of current OS. What you can try is removing QT under add/remove programs, then updating your W95 installation with the MS service packs. After you update the OS, update Explorer to at least the highest version of 5.5. THEN re-install QT.

Many current programs will be looking for certain levels of visual basic libraries etc. 95 is ancient. Does Apple list QT as being comp with 95?? If your machine is not memory starved, I'd go up to at least W98SE.

What DeSquirrel Said.

If I still had to use WIN95 I would have quit computering a long time ago.

But as was pointed out, If you are low on resources, you may have no choice. Always stay as current as you can with what ever Opperating System you use.

Computers with enough resources to run WIN98SE are pretty cheap.

Pretty good advice so far... especially about upgrading to Win98SE.

If you do decide to upgrade, backup all your important files. This may save you some grief later on, actually if you are a business then you should back your files up once a week or so... for an emergency.

Thanks for all the advice! Fortunately, no viruses, etc detected and email has mysteriously started working again on my old IE 5.0.

A new PC is on the horizon so I've been limping along on this old girl with her WIN 95 and dial up modem. Hard to believe but yes, QT 4.0 is WIN95 compatible. I found some WIN95 patches to download. I'm not sure how long these will be around. Someone at MSN told me Microsoft doesn't officially support WIN95.

My tween and teen think we live in the stone age at this house. One of them pulled out my slide rule out of the drawer last week and said "What kind of a ruler is this?"

Again, thanks for your support!
