I just found out that if I import something into Canada from the USA, I may have to pay duties on the item as well as federal and provincial taxes.

Let's say ABC Tire Supply in North Dakota stocks several different brands of vehicle tires. If I purchase a set of Made-In-the-USA Firestone tires for my car, I don't have to pay any duty. OTOH, if I purchase a set of Made-In-Germany Pirellis for my car, I do have to pay duty.

Even though the US dealer has imported these tires and has probably paid the US duty (and had included that in his selling price to me), I have to pay another duty on these to bring them into Canada.

This may be important information for Canadian buyers. When you are looking at a listing by a US seller, especially if it's an expensive item, make sure you ask the seller where the item was manufactured before your place your bid - you might end up paying considerably more.

Wonder how this applies to things like Dresden china?

Free Trade? Yeah, right

sounds like Canadian Government is getting fat off your purchases. I have never heard of having to pay duties on a retail item sold at local stores. In the USA, duties are paid for by the importer and worked into the cost of the item. (I dabble a little with importing here.)

So sorry to hear they got you by the b@lls..

That's exactly right. In this case RB is the importer. I missed the announcement that Germany was part of NAFTA. Rb you also missed the triple tax angle as the Pirelli already paid the duty for the rubber when they imported it from Malayasia.
And as far as Dresden China goes, there is 6% duty on china imports into the U.S and Canada unless it was made in Israel.

It is a fact of life that each time goods change ownership there are taxes. Really don’t matter where you are in the world is the same (sales tax etc) Then their are hidden tax. Many items retail price is 50-90% tax such as liquor, smokes and the like. I have read that a $1.00 loaf of bread from the wheat land to your plate is 47% tax. That is the way it is.

ihave been importing from germany and austria and uk-fine procelain and never have to pay import tax.
you should ask the manufacturer how they fill out the form, there is a code which they use if they do a lot of exporting to that country.
in your case, could it be that us tire and car companies have plants in canada so there is special arrangement for customs exemption while italian have no such arrangement.
