I finally decided that USPS was too high for some items. I went to UPS today to ship. After checking my receipt with the rates at ups.com I'm confused. Everything I shipped was quoted 2 or 3 dollars less that what I was charged. I shipped ground with my own packaging at a customer counter right at UPS.
I charge exact shipping but if I can't get the correct rate online I don't know what to charge. Anybody with UPS shipping experience here?

I have found that when I went into the UPS office to ship a package, they rounded the weight off to the next highest whole pound. Also do you weight the itmes packaged & ready to ship? If not the extra $ amount is comming from the extra packaging & box weight.

I finally opened a online account at UPS where I enter all the data & pay for each shipment by CC.

Also have found the FedEx is less expensive (although not as fast).

I ship anything up to 3.5#'s by USPS, over that by FedEx.

When I compared the rates I used the rounded up weight on my UPS receipt.

I know UPS charges for residential delivery and for anything that is out of the way gets charged a $1 more.

Sounds like you might have choosen the wrong shipping option. The rates are different for non-accounts. It will be higher if you are a private party and bring the parcel direct to the UPS hub. I ship through my place of employment and they have an account with UPS. The rates then are cheaper and then I pay my employer back for the charges. If you pick the correct options, it should come up correctly. I always weigh my items and check the online rates and it does come up correctly for me. I

No I don't have a UPS account. Online they don't ask.
Here's one for example: I shipped one today that went from zip code 74401 to 96007 4.25 lbs. they rounded it to 5lbs. charge I paid was $10.07. When I went online I typed in 5 lbs. same zip codes. The charge at a customer counter is $7.46. I don't get it.

The UPS counter man where I go rounds down to the nearest pound. I always pay less than I am quoted online. Example, I checked one online and it came to $10.76...at the counter it was $7.65.

when i went to ups and put that info in i got 10.07. are you checking residential where it asks if the address is residential or business? when i selected business i was quoted 7.46. seems thats where your problem is!

Not only does UPS charge $1.10 for residential, they also charge $1.50 for "rural" areas.

I have noticed that LOTS of my customers are considered rural.

It's based on zip codes.

I don't know what is done at your PO, but any one I have gone to always charges up to the next pound even if your weight is only over by an ounce. The same for UPS & FedEx. Bear1949, I can't figure out why you use 3 1/2 lbs. as a break point. You are going to be charged for 4 lbs. & the rate for zone 8 is almost double that of FedEx Grnd. I use 2 lbs. as the cut off there isn't too much difference if you add the home delivery charge of $1.10 into the FeEx rate.

snobbish, Thank you, that was it. I'm using business rates not residential.

If you have an account the rates are less. It is very easy to do, just go to myups.com and sign up. You can print your labels from the web and it will give you the business rates. If you take the packages in to ship they charge $2 to $3 more per package. They are much cheaper than USPS on packages over 2 lbs.
