The following is on the USPS web site under Shipping Label FAQ:

Q. Can I drop my online label package in a USPS collection box?
A. Yes, if you have paid for postage online and printed a label with PC Postage service. If you use a postage meter, you can drop your Priority Mail item in a collection box as long as it doesn't weigh more than 5 pounds. If you are using postage stamps, aviation security requires that you take packages 16 oz. and over to your local Post Office for mailing.

It sounds clear, but can also be read as you still need a postage meter, or alternatively PC Postage is OK but is that the same as the postage printed on the label?

So, can I print a label with postage and drop the package in a mailbox?

----part 2

I've seen discussion here about buying full sheet labels $$$. My wife is a photographer and handed me her can of 3M Photo Mount Spray Adhesive. Now I print on plain paper and stick it on with the spray -- that label is now part of the box.

Spray it on the back of the label, and don't do it in the house unless you want a coating of impossible to remove glue on everything including your lungs!

I think you can do that but if you don't have enough postage on that box they will collect it from your buyer. That is what I was told at the post office. I doubt if you want that to happen as the buyer has already paid postage and then has to pay again. That buyer could get irate.

If you have an account with USPS and print priority labels with their own postage, you can drop packages in the box up to 5 pounds weight. Since you have an account you are what is considered to be a "known mailer." This is the difference.

If you simply weigh it on the machine in the lobby and buy the postage (either stamps or printed postage strip that comes from the machine) there and it weighs over 1 pound, they want you to take the package inside and physically hand it over. Supposedly this gives a better "chain" when tracking down anything suspicious, giving the clerks a chance to look the package over. Whether it works or not is a matter of debate.
