I received this email this morning, (did not open it) From; jshaffer Happy Christmas. 147KB. I don't open anything over 100 KB, regardless who sends it to me. I don't know anyone by the name jshaffer.

I use Outlook Express and when I had my settings set to view message if I just clicked once on it. I got the klez virus from just doing that. It automatticly installed itself and started to send out emails. I didn't know I had it until I got returned mail from one of my buyers within minutes. When I went to look at the returned mail it was not sent by me but another person in my address book. The email that was sent was a "Happy Holiday" one and about that size. I changed my settings to where I have to double click on it to open it. I have gotten the klez virus in email 4 times in December. I did not have virus software on this computer prior but I put Norton’s on here and hate it. But I can't find my other cd.

If you have a good virus software and do updates on it often, it will inform you of a virus before the email even opens and will ask you if you want to continue or delete it. I like Mcaffee, because it scans your email messages. I can't figure out this Norton’s. If you don't have virus software, I think you can download a trial versions of Mcaffee. They are well worth it even if it is only a trial version. Or you can go to
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and they will scan your computer for viruses also. I think it is free.

I have Norton Security instslled, but even so, I just won't open any of these huge emails. I have never had a bito troublre with Norton A/V. This is the 3rd computer I have had with Norton. Now using Norton 2002 with automatic updates. I have Windows 98SE on my desktop & ME on my laptop. No problems.

I have norton and it does good for me. It has always informed me when a virus is attached to or in an email. I only have it for a year though so I am going to check into the one that LuckyGiftsandTreasures uses. Thanks Lucky

someone on this board suggested (over a year ago) to set your email so that they won't open for 20 seconds...I set mine that way and have plenty of time to delete after scanning them over...I use McAfee but (knock on wood) have not had a virus since I made this little change.

Use mailwasher.com to look at your emails and bounce unwanted emails. Free. Great program, only I got one email through a dormant account, bounced it (yes it was a virus) and started getting up to 20 bounced back emails a day from postmaster, mailer demon, etc. etc. Finally just shut the account down. Contacted the guy that runs mailwasher and he advised it is better not to bounce a virus email as that can happen. Great for spam though, you can add that company to the blacklist. I still bounce my viruses.
Just start running those mail rules on your email where it keeps those from downloading into your account. Takes a minute or two but saves a lot of time later.
Also I've learned not to just delete them, but to also delete them from the deleted mail! I've run BitDefender virus checker and it always shows those as virus still exsisting if you don't.
Grisoft RULES! Best free program in the universe.

There are a number of the huge virus infested e-mails running around, with endless names and titles. Our Norton Anti-Virus notifies us normally 3 or more times a day about one – but we get hundreds of e-mail every day, so receiving them it to be expected, being fully protected is more important.

If you are running a good anti-virus program, that would have taken care of the problem.

A tip for those who run Compaq Computers, we run 5 Compaqs, and discovered that McAfee Anti Virus program does not like Compaq computers. If you will notice now, McAfee has "special" instructions for Compaq Computer users. We had nothing but problems when we tried to run McAfee - but have no problems running Norton.

Since you can get a virus, not only through e-mail but various ways, copying certain things on the Internet, etc.,running a program that merely checks e-mail for viruses is NOT enough. Any complete anti-virus program, checks not only your e-mail but everything in your computer, and update constantly to include the very latest viruses.
