Often times when I search on eBay for an item I want to buy, I aim to keep under 20 results when possible. What's your "sweet spot"?

If my search for "widget" turns up 1,000 results, I use additional search terms like "new" or "paypal" for better results. Do you use other strategies?

If the auction item is a common one then I use title search only first. If the item is an uncommon item I use 'title & description' search.

Sometimes I use the 'completed' search to see how rare the item is on ebay. That may be part of the reason ebay went from 90 days to 30 days for searching closed auctions. If the potential buyers can see closed auctions without a buyer they may be tempted to email the sellers and try to make an off-site offer or inquiry to buy. Now most of the unsold items seem to be relisted items with 'Go To Item Now' links.
