A buyer in Germany paid for an eBay book through Bidpay. He wants me to send the book to friends in California, which will save about $15 in postage. The Bidpay confirmation notice says not to send it anywhere but his confirmed (Germany) address. What trouble can I get in if I send it to California instead?

The confirmation email that has his address also tells which link on the Bidpay home page to click to report this. Notify them and wait till you get their permission before you send it to the other address. I've done this several times and it has never taken more than an hour for their security department to get back to me. Once they o.k. it, you can ship.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

For a small dollar amount I would not worry about it. Cash the money order, then ship it where the buyer wants.
People do send gifts so there is nothing strange about it.
