I just received a purchase. The whole transaction went smooth and delivery was very quick. Items fine. The seller included a note along with a stamped self-addressed envelope, asking me to send back the used postage, in this case around $6.00. All postmarked, used. Seller says he's a stamp collector. I know a bit about stamps and the postage used is all modern everyday postage. Why ask for it back?

That's what he said: self-addressed stamped envelope.

Some people use contemporary used postage for craft projects. Maybe these stamps are the right color.

Whats the big deal?? Just cut them off the pkg wrapper, stick them in the envelope & drop'em in the mail. Your cost? About 1 minute of time.

I'm with sanmar here, what's the big deal? maybe it is for his collection, a childs collection, who knows?

I once saw a show where the lady collected toilet seat covers...to each their own.

Was this a stamp or a metered sticker with the postage on it? He might be reusing them. LOL I was told that marked or canceled postage can be cleaned off with certain items cleaning products and then reuse- never tested it myself but did hear that from a guy who said he did try it. Maybe he collects postmarks as I have heard of that and have kept certain ones myself from strange places. But his post marks would be of his town. HUMMMMMMM-- ok my 2 cents worth.

Oh Boy! Did I say it was a big deal? A problem for me? It's not. It's merely a minor point of curiosity and something to discuss. This being a discussion board I thought that it was worth mentioning here. Thank you IRKED for your contribution to the discussion. I was thinking it could be something along those lines.

I think your asking why someone would pay to have something back that really has no value.

pointy--"Seller says he's a stamp collector. I know a bit about stamps and the postage used is all modern everyday postage."

Just because your seller said he is a "stamp collector" doesn't mean he's "A Stamp Collector."

He probably just collects stamps because he likes them. He doesn't really need to know anything about them to collect them.

People who collect something they like don't usually care about values (well not too much).

And, I have run across people who want cancelled stamps with postmarks from as many cities, towns and countries as they can get...just for fun.

I had an international buyer request that and one regular buyer who asked that I be sure the post office stamps the city and date on the postage of the package I sent him as he collected the cancellations.

Yes, it is an interesting and fair question. Mind telling us the denominations? Our stamp club obtains stamps for the "Junior Club" we have, and high values are not really easy to obtain. With most high-cost mail being metered or bought on line, they are not as common as you might think. We try to give the kids a bunch of stamps at each meeting, and if I sent out some high-values, I might also ask the same favor.

rgrem....that makes sense....these were high value. A $3.85 priority, and 3 .50 cent, plus others.
