Hope one of you can tell me what i have here ... it's sort of a compass, 3.5" across x 1", it has a magnetic N needle that can be held in place with a little toggle pin ... the ring inside is marked 180 degrees, from 0 to 90 and back to 0 ... but it does not have the N S W E lettering at all .... Keuffel and Esser made it, so do you think this is nautical or do you think it's a surveyor's tool? any input is appreciated ...

K & E primarily manufactured drafting tools and measuring devices for the architectural and engineering trades. I used to sell them for a living and I can't remember anything in their product line for nautical use. It's very likely that your compass was used for a land based process and not for navigation.
