Well, since ebay wont permit id transfers, I think I'll get a 2nd id. I know it's been discussed here before, but since it wasn't relevant at the time, I didn't read the replies, and I can't find anything on the ebay site about the process.

What should I be careful of when applying? Do I need a second password? Can I use the same contact information? Credit card?

Thanks for any help...

DON'T THINK YOU CAN USE THE SAME CREDIT CARD OR EMAIL ADDRESS...

C'mon folks, know before you post.

Yes, you can use the same contact info. Yes, you can use the same credit card. You cannot use the same email address for the excellent reason that your email address is also your eBay user id.

There is no limit on how many ids you can have. I've got a ton of 'em.

Use whatever password you like but for G-d's sake make it hard to guess, or we'll see you back here with a "My eBay account was hacked" thread.

If you use a freemail address (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc) you will have to go through additional verification steps when registering.

Yes, exactly what fluffy said. And I know because I have lots of IDs also, all with the same contact info and CC. Some are for selling, some for buying, some so no one else can have that name, but none of them interact.

And if anyone can find on the site about how many we are limited to, please post it here. I would love to see it.

I believe ebay may use everyone's unique computer IP address to help nab shillers so never even think about bidding on any items from the other account.

robertsmithson: There's an incredibly simple way around that: Use a dial-up account for your second/third/fourth/whatever. The IP will be that of your ISP, not yours.

(It's probably a good thing most people don't realize this.)

Oh, and if you have a firewall at home, the IP is your router's address...not your computer's address.

Nearly all ISPs now dynamically assign IPs, so I'm not all that convinced that IP logging is very effective. If I were concerned about it, I'd power-cycle my router once a day to get a new IP assigned.

Ebay is incredibly tenacious in it's security. Try using an anonymous service similar to SafeWeb to bid on ebay auctions and they somehow block it. Ebay will probably now only check the IP addresses and then contact info of potential shillers reported to them but I'm certain there are programming teams working on programs that will check every IP address on every ebay transaction.

I don't doubt that they check for IP spoofing.

But the notion that your computer has an immutable IP address that brands you is probably incorrect in most cases. I'm sure a lot of people with DSL lines don't even realize their IPs are dynamically assigned.

Cable modems have a permanent IP address. The router does not mask your IP address. It may appear to only give you the routers ethernet address but when you visit a website that site will detect your own computer IP address. A website owner has given me that info.

GOOD INFO, BUT FROM MY EXPERIENCE, I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO USE THE SAME CC I HAVE TIED TO MY MAIN ADDRESS, WHEN I TRIED TO REGISTER MY HOTMAIL ADDRESS.

BUT THAT WAS AWHILE AGO AND THINGS CHANGE

As Robert said, there is a problem if you use a cable modem with a static IP address. I pay for extra IP addresses so I use separate computers for different IDs.

However, you should be able to switch between IDs on the same PC if you clear cookies each time you switch.

Two ebay accounts on one credit card is now okay.

For some real fun get two routers and two computers, that will really confuse the security systems. We have three computers hooked up to a D Link router and a cable modem. There is no problem with being on ebay at the same time with different ebay accounts. No loss of speed either, even when downloading. That's one way to justify the $40 cable modem bill. There is a myth that says that as more neighbors sign up for cable modems the speed decreases. The cable company merely adds more nodes automatically.

Well, since ebay wont permit id transfers, I think I'll get a 2nd id.

CC5, I don't understand what you mean by that. You certainly can change your eBay ID (although sunglasses will show up beside your new ID for 30 days). You can also change the e-mail address associated with your ID (and no sunglasses will appear).

By the way, if you do get a second ID and then later decide to abandon the first ID, you can request to have the two IDs merged. This will result in the feedbacks of the two IDs being combined under the second ID.

Hi Stockticker,
what I meant was that one cannot acquire and transfer someone else's id. I had wanted to use an inactive id held by someone in Canada.
It turns out that according to ebay this cannot be done under any circumstances....they retire abandoned ids...

if you scroll down the board here you'll find another discussion on this started by me, and the letter I received from ebay....

By the way, thanks to everyone for the input on a second id.

Paul
