This morning three of these emails were in our box, one sent to each of our email addresses listed with paypal. Please help... we don't know if these can possibly be ligit, and we don't want to open the attachment!

PayPal Security Update

Due to recent upgrades in our security system, we are requiring all users to upgrade their web browser. We have attached the patch for Internet Explorer as well as Netscape Navigator to this e-mail. All systems must run this patch. If your system has not installed this patch by February 2nd, 2003, your PayPal account will be temporarily locked until the issue is resolved.
Thank you for using PayPal

Side bar is all the usual stuff about not giving out your password, checking for the https address, etc.. but that would be very easy to copy. Address on the email seems to be [email protected], and (of course) it says do not reply to this email.

Doesn't this seem an awfully short time frame for something like this? The second is a Sunday, too!

Also, our browsers are fairly up to date... but we know a lot of paypal users who are still using older versions, and their account are simply going be locked forever?
Sounds fishy to us.

We haven't been able to find anything about this on paypal's site or ebay either, so we're just hoping somebody knows something more about this!
Thanks for any help!
Jennifer

I would be real suspicious of this one. There are a lot of scams out there and maybe that 'patch' would somehow grab your password, ect. Anyone else have any ideas? I did not get those emails.

Run Far Far away from this email. There is nothing that PayPal can do to their website that would require them to send an upgrade for your web browser.

Besides, Microsoft is the one who upgrades your software, not PayPal.

It is either some sort of virus or a worm that is going to give them access to your puter.

I would be leery as well. I haven't received anything yet this morn in my email. Hopefully others will chime in...

An intelligent hacker wouldn't send a PayPal "patch" that was a worm or a virus. Just one that sends him your logons and passwords. That is what this patch probably does.

PayPal has a place for you to report emails like this. Maybe it will help put some of these guys out of business if enough or us report them. Same goes for all the ebay spam.
