I posted 300 items yesterday during ebays free FIXED PRICE day. So far, I sold three items. When ebay had a free listing (for auctions) day back at the end of December, I sold things left and right.

It seems that people prefer auction listings instead of fixed price. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I never have luck with Fixed Price or Buy Me Now and I offer a low price. Seems like they would rather bid for the thrill of it

It largely depends on the item offered.

Sold one out of thirteen listed fixed price, not long after I listed the fixed price.

I think I like auction format better

I don't get it. I hardly ever use Fixed price because I have no luck with it at all. On the other hand my Buy It Now auctions are practically my bread and butter. But of course, I got suckered in to listing a few fixed price with the free listing. Nothing yet, not one sale and these are the items that always sell quickly when I list them with BIN.???

Fixed price and BIN would appear to work better on items that have a value comparision.

Collectible/Antiques would not lend themselves because supply/demand is so fluid that a fixed price isn't appealing.

Commodity type items do pretty well with fixed and BIN - if the price is right.

Listed 200...sold 4 so far. They are actually items I had listed in a regular auction for the same price or lower. They had been up at least a few times each without selling...so I thought why not list them with fixed price... It will be interesting to see what happens by the end of the week.

I run nothing but fixed price auctions

I have 868 fixed price auctions running at
present.

I have 671 regular fixed price auctions and 197 fixed price store items running which are listed with the "Good til cancelled" option which cost only 0.06¢ each month.

With a few exceptions all the store items have a high number of items in them with up to 200 in each one.

To each his own, this is how I make a living.

I've had excellent success so far with the fixed price things this week. I've sold a lot of very small value items that I never could have listed without a free listing.

Maybe your stuff is priced too high? People are on eBay for BARGAINS, not necessarily to pay a fair price for things.

I agree with replymedia, I listed about 150 items that were too small to pay listing prices on, good craft items, but with all the fees, not worth the bother unless it was free listing, sold 9 already

Listed 61 items sold 1 and the prices are very good deals I had to look for the happy medium between auction and Fix price

I only listed two items, not being the volume seller you guys are. I figured whatthehell and listed one $99.00 and one for a little less. They are the highest priced items in my category, so I have no idea if they will sell or not. But the main reason I do ebay is to lead to my website- (via about-me, before any0one tells me what I am doing wrong) I switched my html around, too, to try to present better, since magic wands are about fantasy and wishful thinking...
I think sales are down because people are down- with this war hanging over our heads, I know I am.

Not sure yet how the FP listings will do..I listed about 150 new auctions..actually 50 new items and 100 relists..I priced new items high and reduced prices on relists..sold about 17 so far..mixed between new listings and old..BUT what amazes me is that sales on the non-FP items (auctions started before the FLD) are way up..could this be because people are looking at "seller's other items" or maybe just chance...I dunno but I'm not complaining!

Hello,
For the most part Free Listing days are a bomb on Ebay. They just clutter up Ebay more with low priece stuff. Since Ebay is already cluttered up I stay away from them.

I only posted 72 FP, so far the only action I'm getting is from my regular auctions.

Just what eBay needed. Another FLD now close to 13 million items for sale on eBay. That is why sales are slow.

Anyone care to speculate as to why ebay had a free listing day so soon after the last one? Are they making less $$$ on ending fees and need to bump up profits? Or...?

"Anyone care to speculate as to why ebay..."

I think overall eBay KNOWS that auctions are fading as interest in them wanes. Auctions are fun, but MANY people don't like them because they just want to buy stuff, not wait on am auction to end.

Ebay NEEDS fixed price to work for them. Stores were a failure, but they need to get some kind of a foothold in the fixed price arena.

I suspect many regular sellers (Who are by default AUCTION sellers) are not really all that interested in fixed prices. Read the above posts by people who aren't doing well. Fixed price and auctions are two completely different areas of mastery and many sellers don't modify their pricing/policies to work on the "other side," hence poor sales.

eBay will probably have more fixed-price free listing days as the year progresses. They NEED to get sellers interested in this for their profitability and stock prices to keep gaining.

p.s. My count so far... 145 fixed price sales in three days so far!

I know why, it's because a war is going to start in a few weeks and everybody's eyes are going to be glued to the tv. Ebay will be like a ghost town for at least a month and so they are gettin' while the gettin' is good.

On the bright side, you can probably find some really good deals then.

Yeah, That too.

But then again, the war may start tomorrow or three weeks from now. eBay is big, but it doesn't have input on EVERYTHING.

Would DURING the war be a good time for FLD? At least they'll be getting listings.

Does anyone expect the war to take more than two weeks? The AFTERMATH may be going on for a long time, but I really don't think the real "war" will take very long at all.

At least the war with Iraq. The war with North Korea may take longer. Lots longer.

I ONLY list fixed price auctions, and do very well with them, but find people often wait till the last day to buy just as if it were a "real" auction. Therefore, I have started listing 3 and 5 days auctions, with a goodly bit of success - if buyers are going to wait till the last day, might as well make the last day come sooner.

I have "thought" about the BUY ME NOW format, but I like to move volume, and would rather take a bit less, and sell a lot more as volume can be turned over more quickly, in my humble opinion, via "fixed price."

To each his own.

replay You said that stores were a failure, and that is what I had read and read on these forums, but I jumped in and tried anyway, not much risk, and we do very well through our store, but we promo it with each auction, with slides of similar store items - you can't just "hope" buyers will visit, you have to give them something to see to lure them in. We are VERY happy with the eBay Store feature.

People seem to prefer auctions as opposed to fixed price listings due to the "something for nothing" urge that many bidders have. There's nothing wrong with that; we all want the best deal possible. And I'm sure that the urge to gamble plays a role. And it is gambling, although not in the horseracing sense. Before online auctions came around, there probably weren't a lot of times where a person could sit in front of a computer monitor with a pounding heart screaming "that m*ggot won MY Gucci purse!"

With the fixed price format, buyers see few opportunities where they feel they got "something for nothing" and they "beat" the seller. It's strange, just like the bizarre phenomenon of starting auctions at $1 to get $50 but bidders won't go near an opening bid of just $40 (depending on the item of course). I've got a website where many of the same type of items are often cheaper than my ebay auctions end up being, but oddly enough buyer's won't pay me LESS for the same type of items unless it's on ebay, regardless of my high feedback rating. It's the thrill of getting a bargain that fixed prices don't have in most instances.

Back in December when they had the FLD, I listed about the same numbers if regular auction style listings and fixed price items. The fixed price items out sold the regular listings 2-1. It has been my experience that bidders do not want to wait for an auction to end to get their items. The trend is most going towards the fixed price items. As a seller, I just need to make sure I price my items so I can make money on them. The trend on the regular listings also has them bringing in less dollars than in the past as well. For the same reasons that bidders want the items now.

Dragonmom: linking to your web site from
your eBay About Me page to make sales is a
violation of eBay policies. Enjoy it while
you can. Some jack@ss will eventually
tell 'em.
