Was told this is Nelson McCoy Sand Jar, about the size of #7 or #8 crock. Only markings on it are USA on bottom. Does anybody know anything about this? Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Are there marks on the bottom? It's very nice!

Hi Roadsmith-
Only marking is "USA" which is why I don't think it's McCoy. They were usually pretty good at putting some type of mark.

Actually, many McCoys are marked w/USA only and many have no marks at all. "The letters U.S.A. were used alone from as early as 1926 on some crockery to very late: but the period of heaviest use seems to be during the 1940's." I have lots of older family pieces marked USA.

With a quick glance, I don't see your design in my book, but the finish & colour are similar to early Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Company items.
Many other manufacturers used the USA mark. Some savvy pottery folks will be of help to you.
Very nice jar!

Good Luck!
NOT beachbound on eBay...

Thanks beachbound, didn't realize some of them weren't marked. It's a big, heavy piece but the detailing is wonderful. Hoping with all the experts here some one will be able to say yea or nea to McCoy. Haven't found anything like it in any of my books or on eBay and hate to list something like this without as much info as possible.
