I have only used buy it now a few times. Usually for items I have already listed at least once and they didn't sell. I have had some success this way.
I have noticed that if the Buy It Now price is too far above the starting price, the item often gets no bids.
If you just want to clean out some merchandise, this is a good way though.
On the other hand, I have made some very good buys this way when the seller didn't realize what they were selling.

I list every item with BIN and it has been fantastic for me! I sell clothing and usually set the BIN about 50% above the opening bid. about 40% of my items are sold on BIN. The quicker I make the sale, the faster I make the profit.

I don't use it for everything, but overall I do like it. If it is an item that basically sells for listing price, this is great because I can then put another up for sale. It also is nice because it evens out the workload a little since I have my auctions end on Sunday. I also like getting sales in the middle of the week...

I use it on about 50% of my new auctions, 100% on re-lists. If I list an item that I think may have quite a bit of interest, then I don't use it because of the possiblity of more bids. I find there are quite a few people who only bid on BIN, they don't want to wait for auctions to end.
