I love it when they say

He left to pursue "other career opportunities"

The fact he is staying on as a consultant suggests otherwise.

Still, he was there for only a year. I don't think it really means anything, but who knows.

Where in the h*ll is a tech person going to find better opportunities than at eBay ?

I suspect that there is/was a disagreement over the technology being installed at eBay and he lost the agruement. Tech heads aren't too keen to install, trouble shoot and maintain systems that they didn't recommend.
