well... went to one of them a few days ago and I was in a rush to send out this package... so I got charged for around 13 bucks for fedex ground. from california to florida...

I could have sworn the package was around 10-11 lbs... that should only cost about 10 bucks.

I was wondering, do these authorized shipping centers add in a few extra cents/dollars??? most likely, since how else are they going to make money... but just wanted to know...

i dont usually do UPS or fedex, but occasionally I do get the things over 5 lbs that just isn't reasonable to send with USPS.

Yes they do add to the total. They feel they need to get paid for all the paperwork involved.

If you have a Staples near you, they have a UPS shipping counter and do not add anything to the total.

capyoda: I ship FedEx shipping center quite frequently and FedEx says they do NOT charge anything for picking them up at these centers. Mine is 5 minutes away versus 25 in heavy traffic, so it's well worth anything to me.

However, I posted this question just a couple of months ago myself. Here's the Post and the answer: http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&id=490761&thread=490758

What happens is FedEx tacks on:
1)Fuel Surcharge
2)Home Delivery Fee
3)Rural Fee (if applicable)

oooh they definitely tacked on an extra 3 bucks..

thats quite a bit..

I checked again and its definitely 10 lbs and should only cost $10 bucks.

I just shipped another item via fedex instead of another party.. and it cost $6.38 for something that would have cost USPS $12

I should use fedex more for heavier and larger items.

everytime I have tried to ship Fedex I get quoted an outrageous price that is twice UPS charge so I just ship UPS with heavier packages.

rarriffle,

Are you sure you are checking the ground rate and not air? If you don't have daily UPS pickup then they are a quite a bit higher than Fedex.
If you go to a Fedex facility you do not get charged any extra. If you go to an authorized ship center not owned by Fedex then you will get charged extra. They have to make money somehow.
If anyone ever used MBE for Fedex then they are out of luck, UPS owns MBE and is changing the name to THE UPS STORE and Fedex won't go there anymore.

sapington, where I go is a regular Fedex shipping center...I have been there 3 times and keep asking "is that ground? the cheapest shipping?" to which the lady says yes.

example; i was sending a 12lb box from Ohio to my son in Texas....she quoted me $23.00!! Ups charged me $9.85.

rarriffle,
I just checked the rates and that price is for 3 day air. Either they are really cheating people or maybe they don't take ground there.
If you go to this link http://www.fedex.com/us/dropoff/?link=1
Then on the page that list them all, check the box at the bottom that says add ground. If that place you went to is there then they should have givven you a price between $7.30 and $9.15 depending on if it is rural or not. (commercial address should be around $6.15)
