I really need some help! I scan disc and defrag every few days and I have been having trouble lately. The scan disc and defragging keeps restarting and takes forever to finish - in fact it took a few hours this morning. I have just changed from the Norton Antivirus to the Norton Internet Security. I never had trouble like this when I had just the Anti-virus. I am thinking the problem is the Norton Internet Security. I right-clicked on the icon and it says "disable" If I do that will I just be able to enable after I scan disc and defrag?

I had the same trouble & did exactly what you suggested. Hit disable , then run scan disk & defrag. Brfore you run scan disk, run disk cleanup & get rid of the cookies etc. that have accumulated. This will help speed up your drive. Be sure to enable after you are through.

I use SystemSuite to defrag and also use Norton AntiVirus. SystemSuite provides a warning to turn off all virus protection while using the defrager, indicating that it can dramatically slow the process down. You might try this.

Yes you can renable it after using disable... screen savers will stop or slow defragging also.

You really don't need to scan disk or defrag that often. You should be thinking in terms of months, not days.

One nice thing about XP: instead of JUST doing a DEFRAG, XP has a quick ANALYSIS mode that tells you whether defrag is even necessary -- NICE!

THANKS EVERYONE!! It helped. Pelorus - I used to only scan and defrag every month or so but I read on a thread here awhile back that it should be done every couple days. Someone even said they did it every morning. So, it is not necessary that often?

Are ye confusing CACHE CLEANING with DEFRAG??

Broadband users should clear their caches (INTERNET FILES) often to maintain speed.

I do it at least q/daily

I defrag once a week, and has been working nice for me, but I run Win 98se and use alot of applications and downloading.

As Tom said earlier... if you have Win 2000 or XP it will tell you if you need to defrag.

twelvepole, I also have 98se. I run cleanup, discscan & defrage once a week, also empty my waste basket. Every cleaned helps you run better.

neglus: bring up the defrag dialog box>>hilight which drive you want to defrag>>hit the button marked ANALYSE -- XP will then tell you whether or not that drive needs to be defragged

Norton is permenant in that the definitions that you have downloaded will be the only ones you have... unfortunately you need to keep those updated and the disk only gives you 90 days of free updates....
I pay $19.95/year for a subscription with them.

So if you want to keep current with your anti-virus software, you will need to subscribe to them....

Hey, all you defrag freaks: I go out at dawn every morning and pray to In-tel, the sun god, and he keeps my hard drive in good condition.

That is to say, just because you defrag often doesn't mean there is a cause and effect relationship between that and computer performance.

It is absolutely unnecessary to defrag more than every couple of months. XP users realize this when their computers keep telling them, as one poster here noticed.

Doesn't hurt anything to defrag once a week either...

To keep your Norton A/V up to date, after the first year, you have to buy an annuak subscription. Now costs $29.95. Just had email from Norton adverising System Works including A/V 2003 for $29.95. Supposedly a $300.00 retail value.
