Yesterday my computer suddenly stopped letting me sign onto Paypal, online banking or any other secure sites.

Help! Was it the latest Microsoft security update? What do I do. I have tried changing all my settings and cannot get back on.

I can go to the Paypal sign on page but when I click on logon I get "that page is not available ...check your security settings".

Can anyone tell me what to do?

I have them set to medium and when I still couldn't sign on I called the cable modem folks.

They had me check something about my internet explorer and it says 0 where it should say 128 so they said it was corrupted and that there was nothing to do but restore my computer???

Anyone know any other way. I don't want to lose what I have and they said installing internet explorer again probably wouldn't help.

Hi lindajean, I know that many people were having trouble getting into PayPal last night and I also had trouble for awhile and got page errors after I did get in and it was very slow. But it's working okay for me this morning.

Did you try clearing your cache and then rebooting? Not sure if that will help but it's what I would try first. I did an update the other day and haven't had any problems... knock on wood.

Kiara: Yes, I tried all that. When I called the cable they said to check "help" and where it should say encrypt 128 it says 0 so they said I had a corrupted internet explorer file?

Can someone look at theirs and see if you click on help, then about internet explorer, and then if it says "cipher strength" 0 or 128? Mine says 0.

I reinstalled internet explorer but it still says the same thing.

If I switch to Netscape I wonder if that will fix it. I really don't want to reconfigure my entire computer and lose everything. All other programs are working great.

Kiara: Will you check your cipher strenth?

Mine is 128.

http://www.wldcu.com/IE6/cypher_strength.htm

They have a link here that you can go to if yours isn't set at that. Good luck!

Thanks Kiara.

I will have to play around with that one. I tried downloading IE6 again but it said it was already installed.

I did go to Netscape, downloaded it, and was able to make my paypal payment and get into my banking. One more reason to loath and detest Microsoft and every program it ever made...especially XP!

The cable support person told me I could not fix it with reinstall, only with system recovery disk.

I may just have to rely on Netscape for secure transactions and Explorer for everything else. I know from past experience I don't want to use the recovery disk. Last time I did that I lost everything on my computer. That was why I bought the new one last year. I figured if I had to start over I might as well upgrade at the same time. But, this one runs great except for that one problem.

I know it had something to do with my last Microsoft security update, but don't know what to do to fix it. Anyone else have any suggestions? Any computer guru's out there?

Or, if I can figure out how to navigate through Netscape maybe I will just start using it completely.

Perhaps go to Start/Windows Update and see if it shows any critical updates that you need?

Hopefully someone else here can help.

I am NO computer expert, but something similar happened to me a while ago after I had updated my McCafee Virus scan, apparently, it increased the firewall. I had to disable the firewall completely, and everything is fine. It might be nothing to do with your problem, but I thought I would mention it just in case.

what system are your running? If it's XP I found this
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318378 "how to reinstall or repair"

or this one http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2fdirectory%2farticle.asp%3fid%3dkb%3ben-us%3bQ293907 how to Uninstall the IE on any operating system.

Found one more thing to check, run the verisign online browser check to see if it picks up a 128 bit encryption http://verisign.netscape.com/advisor/check.html

Good Luck! I had this problem a week ago, for some reason all of the sudden I couldn't access the PayPal debit card. They didn't have a clue and I finally had to go in and edit the Privacy button and manually put in PP's website in "always allow" cookie handling. Although with a "0" showing I don't think this is your problem.

Usually Microsoft is very helpful or their website has the answers. I wouldn't think you're going to have to restore your system just yet.

glassgrl: I have only had two problems with this computer in a year of using it.

Now, I think they may be related.

Last December I tried to install my Word program on my computer (I had used it on my old Windows 98 and just thought it would be easy to switch to the new one). When I tried to install it asked me to put my my Microsoft XP Pro disc in the CD rom to continue.

I do not have XP Pro, XP home came on my computer. I thought it had something to do with the version of Word I had so I just left it off and went on about my business.

Now, when I go to the site you posted, and try to do the analysis it recommends, it also requests I put my Windows XP Pro in the cd rom. I bought this on Ubid a year ago, it did not come with any XP disc, just a recovery disc. I couldn't find XP on it anywhere, but I do know it is only XP home version anyway.

I went to the Sony site and found I have a custom configured computer where they specified which operating system, pentium or celeron, etc. Maybe something was set up wrong on the initial config but I am really stumped now.

Everything I try to do wants me to insert a disc I do not have for a operating system I do not have either. XP pro instead of Home.

I think I may just have to learn to love Netscape!

what cable modem company do you use?

Comcast may not be great but at least they have a "restore" button and "detect and repair" in support.

It almost sounds like you tried to install something (word) that was not compatible with XP and therein lies your problem.

Can you do this? (I don't have XP so I don't have a clue, this is from Microsoft website)

"Users can also repair an application by running Office XP Setup in maintenance mode (click Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and select support information, then click Repair)"

I went in and did the repair option. It restarted my computer and everything, but it still did not show the cipher strength right and I still cannot sign on.

I tried to install the Word program back in December. I didn't start having problems with secure sites until yesterday.

I didn't install anything or change anything other than the security update I received from IE.

I am desperate enough to try delete IE6 completely and reinstall, but the cable support (or non-support as it turned out to be) stated nothing would fix XP except a recovery so I don't know

What are you running for Virus?
I had to give up McAfee because after the last upgrade it screwed me up to the point I had to do a total restore 3 times in a row.

Got rid of it and put in Norton no trouble since!

Just a thought.

Also try: Tools,Options,Advanced,Restore Default.

I use Norton. But, it did do an auto update Friday and I hadn't tried to sign onto a secure site after that until yesterday.

I did try the restore to default option, but it didn't help.

I even tried the recover application disk but there isn't an explorer option on it.

Uninstall the IE. If you have netscape you can still sign on and download a new IE. Possibly you downloaded the wrong version of IE?

One of the worst updates I ever did was on Netscape and I uninstalled it.

I wouldn't believe everything a cable tech tells me unless it worked for me. Sounds like he was taking the easy way out. Bet if you called back now and got a different tech you'd get a different answer.

The following link addresses 0 cipher strength and how to fix it.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=261328

If you do a search on google for "internet explorer cipher strength" you'll find more info about your problem.

I'm still working on it and thanks for all the suggestions! I'll let you know if I get it fixed.

I did try uninstalling but I don't believe there is an option for that under XP. It came with the computer and your only option is to repair or restore it when you click on add/remove.

Greatlakes: That site does have lots of info, but none for fixing the problem when using Windows XP.

I knew I was going to HATE XP when waited too long to buy my new computer and couldn't get one with any other version.

Hello
When you said "Rebooted" I hope you ment you shut down and UNPLUGGED everything, Modem, et-all. Leave off for about a minute and re-boot all. I cannot tell you how many times in the past years that have fixed everything.

Also sometimes just shut down and go to bed and next day all is OK. Had that happen about three times in the last two years. (Something to do with time outs)
Luck
