I came accros a wonderful collection of 50's 60's silk and rayon thin neck ties. Some are wrinkled. Can I iron these or will the ironing put an undesirable "shine" on silk?
Thanks

Put a towel folded in half underneath it before you iron. Use the "silk" setting on the iron. Make sure you iron it LIGHTLY. Don't press too hard. I dont remember if steam does anything to it. I could be wrong but I think steam leaves a mark on the material like a water mark or stain.

No don't iron them. If they are silk the wrinkles should come out. They were also made out of Rayon and Acetate. I resell vintage and new ties and I always leave the cleaning and such to the buyer as they usually know what to do. If the ties are new I clean them if they are vintage I don't touch them. Some vintage ties are worth a lot. Dali did ties. Here is a website for vintage ties. You will find it interesting.

I would hang in the shower/steam them so they look good for auction pics, but don't iron unless you have to. If ironing, use a "presscloth". It will protect them. Iron on lowest setting that will work.

You can iron them, put a cloth in the center and place a wet cloth on top.Or cut cardboard to fit and slip it inside of them and steam them. Do not place iron directly on the silk.

the best advice here is from Libra....anything that is vintage is better left alone for the buyer to deal with...if they are collectors they will know exactly how to handle it.
