I sold a craft leaflet yesterday, and today got an instant purchase Paypal payment, even though I had not given the postage, buyer just added what they thought (it was acceptable amount) but with the payment was this message "Please ship via US PRIORITY MAIL to a US Military mailbox. Please check off "Gift" and the destination of Germany for the customs form. (no fee, just paperwork that goes with it.)"
Now, I cannot send it U.S. priority from Canada of course, and we don't have to do customs forms for letter mail, can someone tell me if that would be alright? I will never put "gift" on an item anyway when it is not, but I want to make sure that it will be delivered alright without a customs form.

If you don't have to do a customs form since it's a letter, and if it's going to an APO or FPO box, just mail it.

It is actually is a gift. The buyer is getting it as a gift for the person in the military.

Yes, you are right stormypetr, that explains why the name on the address is different from the buyer. My questions is, does this go via the U.S. or directly to the APO address in Germany. If it goes through the U.S. does it require a customs form?

amber & stormypetr:

It is NOT a gift. It is merchandise. It would be a gift ONLY if the person sending it (in this case amber) was sending it without receiving any payment for doing such. It doesn't matter where the payment comes from or who the package goes to. If you received payment for an item that is shipped, it is merchandise.

eauctionmgt, she said she doesn't have to do customs form on a letter so what is the difference?

my son was stationed in Japan and sent a jacket to his brother. he forgot to check the "gift" part and it cost me $60.00 in customs.

while I don't believe in lying on customs form and would never do it, I can understand why they ask.

rariffle,

You're right... in this case it probably doesn't matter. (although since I'm not Canadian... I don't claim to have knowledge of Canadian custom forms requirements). I just wanted to clarify the "gift" designation so that others who might be reading this thread understand the difference for future transactions.
