We started this discussion on another thread but perhaps it's best to post as new topic...

the question is : Is it worth the extra listing fee to list an item in two categories? Do buyers search for items by categories or key words?

I have to admit I don't know how to search by category except by first doing a key word search, selecting an item and then click on the category at the top of the listing..is there another way??

I don't know if this is legal or not but when I have two or more items that are similar I don't list in two catagories but I do check to see what is selling and if they appear in two catagories I list one in one catagory and the other in another then I make reference "While your here check my other auctions for similar items". It seems to work. I.E. I have two tie clips on and they are from the same company but different designs so I listed one in the tie clips and the other in the company that sells that certain product. It must have worked because I have bids on both. I never ask my buyers to just check my other auctions unless I am selling the same product and then I combine shipping.

Neglus: I saw your question on the other thread. About category searching: I collect wall pockets, and long ago I went into Ebay, the menu down the left side of the home page, clicked on pottery and glass, and when all the categories came up I clicked on wallpockets (under pottery), and bookmarked it. Now I just go to my bookmark.

But you know, I'll just bet most buyers just do what you do, which means most are searching by keyword. Oh, if we could only know. Those of us who sell exclusively in collectibles always have at least two, sometimes three categories to choose from. More money to Feebay, less in our pockets.

I think I will do a survey in my PayPal WBN to find out how the buyer found the item...I did this a couple of months ago to find out preference in image presentation in listings (full size vs click on to enlarge) and was surprised at the number of people who took the time to respond!

Hi there....
When I buy I search on keywords. I cannot remember the last time I searched for anything by category. Some of the items I often search for, if I were to search by category, just plain brings up too many items - 99% of which I am not interested in. Some of my saved searches are quite detailed.

However, when i sell... I go to great pains, as I'm sure everyone here does, to get it into just the right category with as many well-chosen keywords as I can fit in the title. Cover all the bases!

But as I said, no category search for me.

neglus: I saw you post on the other thread about even gallery not benefiting from keyword search.

I have chosen not to list this week because I didn't want my cards buried in all those cute little gallery pics over to the side. I think people may get as spoiled to looking at those to chose what to click on for further review as we are in ignoring the auctions without the picture icon.

I never use gallery but a lot of people do. And, I have to admit it is neat to look at the pic before opening the ad when I am searching for something.
