I had someone email me last night about a vintage aquamarine ring I had listed (2630377820). They asked if it was synthetic or genuine. I had assumed (wrong!) that a 14k mounting would only have a genuine stone. I took it to the jeweler this morning and it turns out to be synthetic. I cancelled the auction, and I want to relist it. I cruised the Ebay auctions and it appears that 99% of the listings don't say if they are genuine or synthetic so there is no way for me to compare prices. How much less does it make my ring worth? It was up to $125 and ending this evening. Is $65 a reasonable amount? The mounting is unusual and quite nice. Thank you for your opinions! tooterville

i was given as a gift back in late 1970s in hong kong-an amethyst ring with real diam0nd and white gold setting, the stone is synthetic.
they made many of those rings and export them to europe and usa.
i have seen them sold in jewelry store as real stones for 300-500 dollars.
even the real stones these days could be lab grown or heat treated.

More often than not it is the Gold in the setting that is more valuable. Aquamarines are not that expensive (you'd probably be amazed at how cheaply most jewelers get their stones). It would be the fact that it's 14k that increases its value more. $65 is very reasonable for a 14k Gold ring with a synthetic stone. I actually know people who prefer Lab created stones to the genuine article. To each his own, I guess.

By the way, I looked at your ring and it's stunning and very unique. 30's or 40's would be my guess. Maybe earlier.

lab grown stones have been around for 100 years, its composition is the same as mother nature, very hard to tell.
these days say emerald, they can remove the impurities and they can add impurities.
in the old days, they will out a small real stone and add the glass over it to make a bigger piece of stone.
of course there are pretenders-many ruby are actutally garnet.
many jades are actually serpertine or aventurine
