Hi,
Just had a winner whose zip is from Puerto Rico. My auction states US only. I know Puerto Rico is a Territory so I really have no problems with the person bidding etc.
I have never shipped there before, so is there anything that is different shipping there vs shipping to a state?
I'm figuring Priority with Insurance and Delivery Confirmation. Will there be anything else required?
Thanks in advance!

Shipping to Puerto Rico is exactly like shipping to any other location in the US. I ship there almost weekly and have never had a single problem. Don't let it spook you.

The only US zipcodes that have slightly different rules are the APO type of military addresses. The bases are are foreign soil and must have a customs slip and no Delivery Confirmation is allowed.

It's the same if you use USPS, but if you need to use UPs or FedEx, then you need a commercial Document. Don't know why the difference....

If you normally ship Parcel Post or Media Mail, you may want to get the guy to upgrade to Priority. PP and MM usually take a LOT longer when going to PR.
SIX WEEKS is not uncommon!

APO and FPO.
Also, when using UPS Ground, it can't go to Alaska or Hawaii (obviously), and I would guess PR.

Thanks everyone. I usually offer USPS Priority or Parcel Post. But I only offered him Priority. Send him his winning bidder notice before coming here and posting. So guess I'm all set.

capotasto - I know that FedEx ground now has ground service to Alaska and Hawaii, perhaps UPS does too now. It takes a little longer, but it's still cheaper than 2 day air!

I just tried to get a rate for a shipment to Alaska via FedEx Ground, and the ratemaker rejected it. It's possible he sent me a P.O. zipcode, but I just figured ground service was not available to Alaska. I'll have to check into that further. FedEx Ground does serve Puerto Rico, and they have for quite some time.

Hmmmm...Interesting. I just looked up a rate to Anchorage from Central Calif for a 5 pound package. It would not give me a rate for FedEx Home Delivery. The message stated that I could not ship from my zip to 99501 or 99504 which are both non P.O. only zips. However, when I unchecked residential delivery, it gave me a rate for FedEx Ground. $19.04 with a 4 business day delivery time. There is definitely some air transportation hidden in there somewhere for a transit time of 4 days. I'm now wondering if they will only deliver to business addresses, or if they will deliver to a residence and add a res. surcharge?

maybe it's something that was only available to businesses? I know my girlfriend's old company used to do it all the time. She showed me the rate card and we got a laugh out of ground service to Hawaii.

Fedex ground only delivers to business address if sent from the 48 states to Alaska or Hawaii. On small packages it isn't a lot less than 2 day but it would probably be worth it for something heavy. If you would ship something and it turned out to be a residence I am sure they would still deliver it.
