I had an auction close last night for an antique book, for $33. Buyer said twice that she wanted cheapest postage. I gave the postage, and said I advised insurance which would be an extra $1, and added it into the totle. She paid right away with Paypal, leaving off the $1 for insurance, with the message "insurance unnecessary". My question is, could I get a chargeback on this even though she has refused insurance? Because I am mailing from Canada, I can only get a tracking # if I insure. Should I pay the insurance myself?

If it were me? I'd pay the $1. It's not too much a price to pay for your peace of mind. It appears you are more worried about it than your buyer.

If it would make you feel better I would put the insurance on it and forget about it.
Why get into a PayPal problem over a dollar.

I don't know how chargebacks work on international transactions. I know from the US, Canada is strange because the item needs to be one pound before you insure. I've fortunately not had problems, but on orders over $50 I would probably either require insurance for international bidders, or have them pay with bidpay.

Your first mistake was that you give them a choice in this matter. Never do that. Just add the insurance in with the total shipping cost.

Yes! Paypal does not care about this. All they would ask is about the tracking or D.C. number.

How are you sending this parcel? Air or ground? From what I have seen on the boards is that you can get a D.C. number even with surface shipping which should cover you with paypal.

Buy the insurance yourself in this case, but the next time someone does this to you just send the payment back via the refund button. and have them resend the right amount.

Thanks for the good advise. I paid the insurance, but in future, I will just add it to the postage. I guess I was trying to make the postage seem less because she asked twice for the cheapest postage. I don't understand why people bid high $'s on an item, and then don't want to insure it, It kind of makes a bell go off in my head. If there is no tracking #, then there is no proof it was ever delivered, and "small package rate" from Canada cannot be insured, it has to go what is known as expedited mail, which costs more in postage, and includes insurance.

When I pay for an item with paypal, I only take out insurance if I think there is a chance the item will get damaged or broken. If it is simply a matter of the item getting lost, I am unworried because if they used dc, then it would most likely get to me. If they did not use dc, I would just file a complaint with paypal and get my money back. Why take insurance if you are just worried about an item getting lost? If it is sent without trackable shipping, the seller will not win.

ahc3,
read what the author said-he is in canada and their way of online tracking is insurance.
so is 1.00 big dollar too much for this buyer to pay to protect herself and the seller??
he should have include that one buck in shipping and dont even tell her .

Oh, I read it very clearly. From a BUYER'S perspective it makes no sense to pay for insurance as a hedge against a misdirected package. In the end, you will get your money back from paypal if there is no proof of delivery. What the seller SHOULD have done, especially coming from Canada, is REQUIRE insurance. If they don't want to word their auction as insurance required, they should just add $1 to their shipping and handling charges. It is not to protect the buyer, they are already protected with paypal. It is to protect the seller!
