When sending a money order to a seller overseas, is it necessary to send an "international" money order as opposed to a common money order? If so, are these available at banks or post offices?

EESH! And the seller is cool with this?

If they really will accept a money order then yes, it does need to be an International one. You can purchase them at the post office. I've sent hem to Japan a number of times but never to China. You might want to check with your post office to just to be sure. If you are a member and gcan get them free, you might lso want to look into Travelers Checks, especially since if they are lost in the postal system you can get them replaced with much less hassle than a money order.

The seller is in Hong Kong, has been selling for 7 months, and has a perfect feedback record.

HK is no problem. An International MO is negotiable there. Actually they can cash US Dollar checks but the bank fees are high so they don't wan't them generally as they need to place them for collection.

I have sent money orders to both China & Japan. Must use International M.O. Very expensive, I believe the one to China cost me $10.00. You have get them through your bank.

Cheap route your local super market may sell an international mo. I have sent several to Canada and the fine print indicates they are good worldwide. I don't think a PO money order will work.

Alldings. You may not think they do but after four years of buying from a dealer in Japan, I KNOW that they do. The difference is that you must ask specifically for an INTERNATIONAL money order.

japan and canada post office both sell us dollar postal orders, but the other countries like china and hong kong do not.
in hong kong, depends on how much business you do with your bank, cashing a personal us dollars check from usa can be free or for a fee.

I just spent all morning trying to get an international money order. The banks do not sell them and the Post Office does not have one for China!

china is china, hong kong is hong kong.
when it comes to banking and finance, hong kong is way ahead of china.
what did your hk seller ask for??
american express can sell you us draft which he can cash at hk american express office or deposit in his bank account.
if you want to send cash, make sure it is registered and there is a limit of how much you can declare at the post office for hong kong .
there is also paypal ,have you asked him if you can pay him thru paypal??
there is also thomas cook travel agency, they have offices in hk airport.
or look into c2it new site, for 10 dollars fee,you can use your credit card or bank fund to send him a check and c2it will mail it to his home.

Stusi - try travelers checks. It's going to be the eaiest route since money orders are out of the question.
