It's 9 inches tall.

The handle turns a spindle with little prongs that stick up through the slots in the top.

Does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks

Nutmeg grinder.

(fresh) Parmesan cheese grater for the table?

That would be my guess.

It's a grater probably for cheese. I suppose it can be used for nutmeg, too or most anything else you want to grate. 1930's or maybe earlier? However old it is, it's just what my boyfriend has been looking for. He hates the newer ones. Too many plastic parts that I break on him while cleaning it. Told him the solution is that he clean his own grater.

It's definitely not a nutmeg or a cheese grater. The mechanism looks more like a nut chopper. The prongs force the nuts (soft ones like walnuts and pecans) through the slits. I've never used one, but you could try it and see what happens! You could also go to a kitchen gadget store and see how this compares to new nut choppers.

Thanks for the replies, so far.

I looked up all your suggestions on ebay.

It appears if it falls into the grater or chopper catagory, it's not really worth much.

I purchased the chopper? grater? thing this morning for .50

So it's not a big loss.

maple walnut ice cream

Wow, did that conger up some memories. Used to be a place not too far from here that made homemade icecream. Their maple walnut was the best! Sadly, they're gone now (the old couple died).

If you don't know what it is, and it's in good shape, use that catch-all ebay title:

minty thingy

Whatever it is, I like it. Looks old enough to be interesting. You could try it
out on a couple walnuts. Find a Manual Ice Cream freezer and make some
Ice Cream. My Aunt always told me, "Who ever helps crank the handle enjoys
the Ice Cream more".

Now bundle the thing with the freezer and a couple hand written recipes and
instructions. You may take any profits and buy a Electric Ice Cream Freezer
for yourself. My aunt was always tricking me into working more than I wanted
to do.

One more thought. Check Lehman's catalog online. They probably have them
new. I love looking around in their catalog from time to time.
