Are there any rules that deal with buyers remorse on ebay?
I have a guy that bought a stone from me. He emails me and says "My g/f does not like the colour, It was meant to be a special B'day gift, can I have a refund?" So I look into his bidding history (on a hunch) and sure enough he has bought some synthetic stones of the same type as my natural stone. I have never charged a restocking fee before this but, I am seriously thinking of whacking a 50% restocking fee on him for wasting my time. Is this too harsh. I wonder if his g/f knows that she is only worth a $4 synthetic stone on her B'day?
Just Venting.
Cheers,
Adrian

$4.00? It isn't evenworth returning it for that price. Tell him to return it, he pay the postage and to tell him he has to put insurance on it. Iam sure he will think twice about returning it. I wouldn't charge a restocking fee if you didn't say anything in your TOS but maybe in the future you could add that.

i think what he/she meant was....

the buyer bought an expensive stone off of the seller...

and then asked for a refund, because he decided it was too much money.. and instead is buying his g/f a synthetic $4 dollar stone for her...

what a loser.

say no. heh.

just for being a cheap b/f.

but eh.

depending on the price of the stone.. 1-10% restock fee? *shrug*

Hi Libra,
My item was $65 the one that he bought after mine was a $4 synthetic. I do not currently have a R/S fee in my TOS. However I have gone to a lot of trouble to get good pics and write a very accurate description. Perhaps I will call it a 50% illiteracy tax rather than a restocking fee. There is no reason for this guy to return the stone other than the fact he only wants to spend $4 on his G/F. Is it my fault that he is a cheapskate?
Cheers,
Adrian

How do you know that he won't be stupid enough to try a switch?

I would just tell him "No", that is not an acceptable reason for a refund...

Make him pay for shipping, with insurance, and tack on a 15% restocking fee. Did he pay through PayPal?

I am sorry I interperted it wrong. To early in the morning for me. If the other stone looks like yours I don't know if I wouod accept it back. Would you beable to tell the difference? That is the first question. If yes then I would do a restocking fee of 15 or 20% Good Luck BTW besides S/H and insurance

Wow Twelvepole, that is too cool!
Libra, Yes I would be able to easily tell the fake from my stone. Mine is a pink/orange to raspberry colour change sapphire and the synthetic is a pink lab sapphire. The lab sapphires are pretty cheesy. Here is a pic of my stone.
Thanks for all your replies.
Cheers,
Adrian

Give the guy a break! Give him his purchase price back. His girl liked the color of the other stones better a choice that was out of his and your hands. We've all made purchase errors and had to bring things back.

ebay is a venue,it does not set any rule on returns or exchange.
it is up to individual seller.
how did he pay for it??
ebay is a flea market, customer satisfaction is not paramount to seller success.
if you feel you work too hard to take the item back, then tell him there is no buyer remorse policy, all sales final.
worst is you will get a neg.

After having a think about it and reading the posts here I am going to slap him with a restocking fee to cover ebay fees both selling and relisting. It takes a lot of time and effort to write descriptions and take decent photo's. He could have shown his G/F the auction if he was truly concerned about whether she would like it or not. The photo is very enlarged to show the stone warts and all. I still think he is being Cheap.

Adrian

Make sure he knows you know that he's purchased a synthetic stone as well and make sure he knows that you will be able to detect a substitution, and that a refund won't be issued until you've verified that it's the stone he was sent.

Casual buyers don't realize how easily an experienced eye can see the differences in stones and metal.

Hi Msincognito,
Thanks for the advice. I did let him know but I was subtle. I lightened up on him a bit and offered him a refund less s/h and all ebay fees associated with the item. He responded by declining the offer and whining that his G/F will have to wait till next year to get a nice present.
Cheers,
Adrian

I am feeling soooo cynical, but I suspect that a switch was exactly what he had in mind.

Thinking about this entire incident and the benefits of a "trained eye" reminded me about my former life as a sales clerk at Victoria's Secret, which had a very liberal return policy (at least at the time.)

We'd have people bring in bras - some quite disgustingly worn - and insist they'd bought them there, even though the tag had one of the JC Penney or Sears house brands.

But the most blatant switch attempt I ever saw was when someone came into the gift shop where I worked @ Disney to "replace" a necklace she swore she'd bought there ... we sold fine Baltic amber w/ 14kt gold and the necklace she was trying to pawn off was molded plastic with base-metal findings (and bore only a passing resemblance to the items we had.) I can only imagine that she brought the necklace with her on vacation, saw ours, thought "hey, I can get a free necklace if I throw a big enough fit." For once, Disney did not give in .. she was actually escorted out of the park.

The closer, I believe, was when I showed my boss the stamp on the jewelry tag that said "Avon."

If its the same stone refund. If its a switch send it back to him and take the neg that he will give. HA HA. EITHER WAY YOU LOSE UNDER EBAY'S RULES. Always remember Ebay needs more buyers not more sellers they couldn't care less if you fell off the face of the earth.

Big - are you really that niave? Sellers need more buyers. EBAY needs sellers - the buyers don't put money in ebays pocket- it's the sellers that do it.

We have our Shipping/Return link on all of our auctions, and it is up to the buyer to read before they buy. We charge a 20% restocking fee across the board, and seldom relent on such. We have had no problem in collecting when a client decides they want a refund for any reason except a mistake on our part in the description or photo. This stops 99.9% of returns from “buyer’s remorse,” or those who buy items which they use once (table wear) for a big party and then try to return them -......
